260 Devotional, August 28, Galatians 3

1 O foolish Galatians! Who has bewitched you? It was before your eyes that Jesus Christ was publicly portrayed as crucified. Let me ask you only this: Did you receive the Spirit by works of the law or by hearing with faith? Are you so foolish? Having begun by the Spirit, are you now being perfected by the flesh? Did you suffer so many things in vain—if indeed it was in vain? Does he who supplies the Spirit to you and works miracles among you do so by works of the law, or by hearing with faith— just as Abraham “believed God, and it was counted to him as righteousness”?

Know then that it is those of faith who are the sons of Abraham. And the Scripture, foreseeing that God would justify the Gentiles by faith, preached the gospel beforehand to Abraham, saying, “In you shall all the nations be blessed.” So then, those who are of faith are blessed along with Abraham, the man of faith.

10 For all who rely on works of the law are under a curse; for it is written, “Cursed be everyone who does not abide by all things written in the Book of the Law, and do them.” 11 Now it is evident that no one is justified before God by the law, for “The righteous shall live by faith.” 12 But the law is not of faith, rather “The one who does them shall live by them.” 13 Christ redeemed us from the curse of the law by becoming a curse for us—for it is written, “Cursed is everyone who is hanged on a tree”— 14 so that in Christ Jesus the blessing of Abraham might come to the Gentiles, so that we might receive the promised Spirit through faith.

Reflection

  1. Continuing from the last part of Ch 2, Paul further developed the argument of Justification by faith alone.  He pointed out the Galatians’ own experience (v1-5) and Abraham’s example; they all demonstrated that salvation is by faith and not law (v6-14). Law never abandoned promise as the key to God’s dealings with man (v15-25) and in Christ believers become sons of God (v26-29).
  2. The Galatians had been taught that they had received the Holy Spirit by faith and not by obeying the law.  However, they still thought it was too simplistic to be saved by faith only.  They wanted to have some rules and creeds to follow in order to feel closer to God.  Spiritual exercises such as prayer and Bible reading as well as serving may help us grow spiritually but it can never replace the work of the Holy Spirit.  Paul raised some pointed questions (vv1-4), and tried to help them to restore Christ as the center of their faith.
  3. Do you think it not realistic to depend on faith alone for salvation?  Do you think your faith is too simplistic? Would you think that perhaps a bit more work on your part may bring more assurance? Stay at this point for a while.
  4. Pray that God would teach you to allow God to be in control of your salvation?  And pray for a “simple” but not “simplistic” faith in Him.

Prayer & Journaling:

Stay with God for a little longer.  Continue to converse with God and listen to what he wants to tell you.

If you have a prayer journal, as you listen to God, write down a few thoughts, questions, words, names, drawings, or anything that has come to your mind during this time.

Family Time (Begin this time by reading the passage above using a children’s Bible. If your children are younger, you may read 7-9 only.)

Salvation for Children:  A young child can understand being sorry for harming others (repentance); the need for forgiveness that cannot be earned by trying to be good (grace); trusting God to rescue them rather than relying on themselves (faith); and living life in that trust through actions that express love for God and for people (life being transformed).

Proverbs for Today 21:1-4

The king’s heart is a stream of water in the hand of the Lord;
he turns it wherever he will.
Every way of a man is right in his own eyes,
but the Lord weighs the heart.
To do righteousness and justice
is more acceptable to the Lord than sacrifice.
Haughty eyes and a proud heart,
the lamp of the wicked, are sin.

260 Devotional, August 27, Galatians 2

15 We ourselves are Jews by birth and not Gentile sinners; 16 yet we know that a person is not justifiedby works of the law but through faith in Jesus Christ, so we also have believed in Christ Jesus, in order to be justified by faith in Christ and not by works of the law, because by works of the law no one will be justified.

17 But if, in our endeavor to be justified in Christ, we too were found to be sinners, is Christ then a servant of sin? Certainly not! 18 For if I rebuild what I tore down, I prove myself to be a transgressor. 19 For through the law I died to the law, so that I might live to God. 20 I have been crucified with Christ. It is no longer I who live, but Christ who lives in me. And the life I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me. 21 I do not nullify the grace of God, for if righteousness were through the law, then Christ died for no purpose.

Reflection

  1. Paul reported his second visit to Jerusalem that his call to preach the gospel was confirmed by the original apostles (v1-10), then he defended his gospel against Judaizing tendencies by rebuking Peter in Antioch (v11-21).  Paul’s opponents questioned the authenticity of the gospel he preached. But he refused to give in to the false teachings of legalism.
  2. Many people go to temples, burn incense, and engage in meditation, charitable deeds and generous donations in the hopes of receiving peace and prosperity.  Children are often told that Santa Claus checks “his list twice to see who’s naughty or nice” in order to give them gifts at Christmas accordingly.  Is there any difference between the two examples?  If Santa Claus existed and had a list with your name on it, what would be the conditions to determine whether you were naughty or nice?  Write them down on a piece of paper.
  3. How is Jesus’ gift of salvation different from them? “A person is not justifiedby works of the law but through faith in Jesus Christ” (v16). Bring this list to God and thank Him that He is not like Santa.  Tear up and throw the list to the garbage.  Once again, thank God for all the grace gifts given you without your working for them.

Prayer & Journaling:

Family Time (Begin this time by reading the passage above using a children’s Bible. If your children are younger, you may read v16 only.)

Refer to the questions in Meditation.  Discuss the lyrics of “Santa Claus is coming to town”, esp. “He’s making a list and checking it twice”.  Parents, this is a good time to explain God’s free and precious gift of salvation to your children.  If a child wants to accept Jesus, help him/her to make the decision and pray for him/her.  Write the decision on your Family Devotional Journal.

Proverbs for Today 20:28-30

28 Steadfast love and faithfulness preserve the king,
and by steadfast love his throne is upheld.
29 The glory of young men is their strength,
but the splendor of old men is their gray hair.
30 Blows that wound cleanse away evil;
strokes make clean the innermost parts.

260 Devotional, August 26, Galatians 1

1 Paul, an apostle—not from men nor through man, but through Jesus Christ and God the Father, who raised him from the dead— and all the brothers who are with me,

To the churches of Galatia:

Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ, who gave himself for our sins to deliver us from the present evil age, according to the will of our God and Father, to whom be the glory forever and ever. Amen.

I am astonished that you are so quickly deserting him who called you in the grace of Christ and are turning to a different gospel— not that there is another one, but there are some who trouble you and want to distort the gospel of Christ. But even if we or an angel from heaven should preach to you a gospel contrary to the one we preached to you, let him be accursed. As we have said before, so now I say again: If anyone is preaching to you a gospel contrary to the one you received, let him be accursed.

10 For am I now seeking the approval of man, or of God? Or am I trying to please man? If I were still trying to please man, I would not be a servant of Christ.

REFLECTION

  1. Paul greeted the Galatians (v1-5) and immediately launched a defense of his gospel (v6-10). He received this gospel directly from God (v11-23).
  2. The gospel these false teachers taught to the Galatians was essentially different from the Gospel of God (vv6-9).  Paul said it’s no gospel at all.  Any message that tells us “try harder” is not good news at all.  No matter how hard we may try, we can never be good enough to escape the bondage of “the present evil age.”  Only God’s grace, through the person of Jesus Christ, is truly Gospel – “Good News.”
  3. What are some ways the gospel is being distorted today?  How can you ensure that the gospel you believe and preach is the true gospel?  How can you increase your understanding of the gospel?
  4. How might the way you present the gospel be different if you are seeking the approval of people vs of God (v10)?  Ask the Holy Spirit to show you your true intention and pray for God’s forgiveness and/or empowerment to bear truthful and fruitful witness for Him.

Prayer & Journaling:

If you have a prayer journal, as you listen to God, write down a few thoughts, questions, words, names, drawings, or anything that has come to your mind during this time.

Family Time (Begin this time by reading the passage above using a children’s Bible. If your children are younger, you may read vv3-5 only.)

Getting to know Mom & Dad:  Conduct an interview of Mom and Dad by your children on how you became Christians.  Encourage children to include questions such as “what was you like before you became a Christian, how did you become a Christian, what happened after you became a Christian”.  Record the interview in your Family Devotional Journal. Ask an older child to pray thanking God for parent’s experiences of becoming Christians.

Proverbs for Today 20:25-27

25 It is a snare to say rashly, “It is holy,”
and to reflect only after making vows.
26 A wise king winnows the wicked
and drives the wheel over them.
27 The spirit[f] of man is the lamp of the Lord,
    searching all his innermost parts.

260 Devotional, August 23, 2 Corithians 13

1This will be my third visit to you. “Every matter must be established by the testimony of two or three witnesses.” 2I already gave you a warning when I was with you the second time. I now repeat it while absent: On my return I will not spare those who sinned earlier or any of the others, 3since you are demanding proof that Christ is speaking through me. He is not weak in dealing with you, but is powerful among you. 4For to be sure, he was crucified in weakness, yet he lives by God’s power. Likewise, we are weak in him, yet by God’s power we will live with him to serve you.

5Examine yourselves to see whether you are in the faith; test yourselves. Do you not realize that Christ Jesus is in you—unless, of course, you fail the test? 6And I trust that you will discover that we have not failed the test. 7Now we pray to God that you will not do anything wrong. Not that people will see that we have stood the test but that you will do what is right even though we may seem to have failed. 8For we cannot do anything against the truth, but only for the truth. 9We are glad whenever we are weak but you are strong; and our prayer is for your perfection. 10This is why I write these things when I am absent, that when I come I may not have to be harsh in my use of authority—the authority the Lord gave me for building you up, not for tearing you down.

11Finally, brothers, good-by. Aim for perfection, listen to my appeal, be of one mind, live in peace. And the God of love and peace will be with you.

12Greet one another with a holy kiss. 13All the saints send their greetings.

14May the grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit be with you all.

REFLECTION

  1. The church at Corinth was a pastor’s nightmare, but their new life was ablaze in them.  Their problems are many and serious.  But, they knew that their lives were being shaped for some grand and eternal purpose.  In spite of some hard words exchanged between Paul and them, he called them “friends” and encouraged them to “keep their spirits up” (v11).  And he wished them the best by blessing them(v14).  This demonstrates that even though we can have strong disagreements within the body of Christ, we can still be friends, still encourage one another, still hope the best for each other.
  2. What about your church?  Can you still keep friendship with someone at church even though you hold different opinions?  Pray for your church that it will be filled with people who are true reflections of God’s love and power.

Prayer & Journaling:

Family Time (Begin this time by reading the passage above using a children’s Bible. If your children are younger, you may read vv11-14 only.)

The reading of the Scripture has long been a form of prayer. Let your family read these verses together in unison as a prayer. Ask each person to select one phrase and explain how it fits the person’s present situation.

Proverbs for Today 20:21-24

21 An inheritance gained hastily in the beginning
will not be blessed in the end.
22 Do not say, “I will repay evil”;
wait for the Lord, and he will deliver you.
23 Unequal weights are an abomination to the Lord,
and false scales are not good.
24 A man’s steps are from the Lord;
how then can man understand his way?

260 Devotional, August 22, 2 Corithians 12

1I must go on boasting. Although there is nothing to be gained, I will go on to visions and revelations from the Lord. 2I know a man in Christ who fourteen years ago was caught up to the third heaven. Whether it was in the body or out of the body I do not know—God knows. 3And I know that this man—whether in the body or apart from the body I do not know, but God knows— 4was caught up to paradise. He heard inexpressible things, things that man is not permitted to tell. 5I will boast about a man like that, but I will not boast about myself, except about my weaknesses. 6Even if I should choose to boast, I would not be a fool, because I would be speaking the truth. But I refrain, so no one will think more of me than is warranted by what I do or say.

7To keep me from becoming conceited because of these surpassingly great revelations, there was given me a thorn in my flesh, a messenger of Satan, to torment me. 8Three times I pleaded with the Lord to take it away from me. 9But he said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” Therefore I will boast all the more gladly about my weaknesses, so that Christ’s power may rest on me. 10That is why, for Christ’s sake, I delight in weaknesses, in insults, in hardships, in persecutions, in difficulties. For when I am weak, then I am strong.

REFLECTION

  1. When we tell people that God guarantees his children health and wealth in this life, or if they only have enough faith, they’ll be healed, that’s not true.  Paul prayed with total confidence, only to learn that the answer was no.  He learned in time that the weakness which devastated him was truly a gift from God.  A gift that enabled him to experience God’s grace, presence, and power, in ways he would never have experienced them otherwise.  So, when tragedy strikes and disaster comes, God will give his own strange gifts as we grow in our dependence on him.  As we seek His strength, we’ll discover a depth to our relationship with the Lord that we would otherwise never have known.  And a strength that makes weakness a triumph and a joy.
  2. God’s best gifts are often wrapped in tragedy and suffering.  Do you agree?  Have you experienced God’s gift in v9 “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness”?  What is your weakness?  Have you received God’s gift?  How does this gift help you experience God’s power and grace?

Prayer & Journaling:

Stay with God for a little longer.  Continue to converse with God and listen to what he wants to tell me.

If you have a prayer journal, as you listen to God, write down a few thoughts, questions, words, names, drawings, or anything that has come to your mind during this time.

Family Time (Begin this time by reading the passage above using a children’s Bible. If your children are younger, you may read vv9-10 only.)

What a wonderful thought – Christ’s grace is sufficient; it is enough. What a wonderful reality – even when we feel weakest, God is still strong. He was sufficient for Paul thousands of years ago, and He is sufficient for us today. Sing, “Because He Lives.” Tell how God’s grace and strength help each family member. Say thanks to God.

Proverbs for Today 20:17-20

17 Bread gained by deceit is sweet to a man,
but afterward his mouth will be full of gravel.
18 Plans are established by counsel;
    by wise guidance wage war.
19 Whoever goes about slandering reveals secrets;
therefore do not associate with a simple babbler.
20 If one curses his father or his mother,
his lamp will be put out in utter darkness.

260 Devotional, August 21, 2 Corithians 11

16 I repeat, let no one think me foolish. But even if you do, accept me as a fool, so that I too may boast a little. 17 What I am saying with this boastful confidence, I say not as the Lord would but as a fool. 18 Since many boast according to the flesh, I too will boast. 19 For you gladly bear with fools, being wise yourselves! 20 For you bear it if someone makes slaves of you, or devours you, or takes advantage of you, or puts on airs, or strikes you in the face. 21 To my shame, I must say, we were too weak for that!

But whatever anyone else dares to boast of—I am speaking as a fool—I also dare to boast of that. 22 Are they Hebrews? So am I. Are they Israelites? So am I. Are they offspring of Abraham? So am I. 23 Are they servants of Christ? I am a better one—I am talking like a madman—with far greater labors, far more imprisonments, with countless beatings, and often near death. 24 Five times I received at the hands of the Jews the forty lashes less one. 25 Three times I was beaten with rods. Once I was stoned. Three times I was shipwrecked; a night and a day I was adrift at sea; 26 on frequent journeys, in danger from rivers, danger from robbers, danger from my own people, danger from Gentiles, danger in the city, danger in the wilderness, danger at sea, danger from false brothers; 27 in toil and hardship, through many a sleepless night, in hunger and thirst, often without food, in cold and exposure. 28 And, apart from other things, there is the daily pressure on me of my anxiety for all the churches. 29 Who is weak, and I am not weak? Who is made to fall, and I am not indignant?

30 If I must boast, I will boast of the things that show my weakness.

 REFLECTION

  1. Read this passage slowly as if you were with Paul: storms, imprisonment, beating, robbery, hunger, shipwreck, drift at sea……  What do you think of such a “resume” of Paul, a great spiritual giant in contrast to the impressive resume the world seeks after?  How do you think such a leader?
  2. Why does Paul say, “30 If I must boast, I will boast of the things that show my weakness”? God is still looking for “weak” people in whom to display His strength.  Are you interested in the job?

Prayer & Journaling:

Stay with God for a little longer.  Continue to converse with God and listen to what he wants to tell me.

If you have a prayer journal, as you listen to God, write down a few thoughts, questions, words, names, drawings, or anything that has come to your mind during this time.

Family Time (Begin this time by reading the passage above using a children’s Bible. If your children are younger, you may read vv30 only.)

Find the word boast in a dictionary. Read also Ch 10:17.  Why did Paul tell us not to boast about ourselves? Pray that God will help you be humble and not boastful.

Proverbs for Today 20:14-16

14 “Bad, bad,” says the buyer,
but when he goes away, then he boasts.
15 There is gold and abundance of costly stones,
but the lips of knowledge are a precious jewel.
16 Take a man’s garment when he has put up security for a stranger,
and hold it in pledge when he puts up security for foreigners.

260 Devotional, August 20, 2 Corithians 10

1By the meekness and gentleness of Christ, I appeal to you—I, Paul, who am “timid” when face to face with you, but “bold” when away! 2I beg you that when I come I may not have to be as bold as I expect to be toward some people who think that we live by the standards of this world. 3For though we live in the world, we do not wage war as the world does. 4The weapons we fight with are not the weapons of the world. On the contrary, they have divine power to demolish strongholds. 5We demolish arguments and every pretension that sets itself up against the knowledge of God, and we take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ. 6And we will be ready to punish every act of disobedience, once your obedience is complete.

7You are looking only on the surface of things. If anyone is confident that he belongs to Christ, he should consider again that we belong to Christ just as much as he. 8For even if I boast somewhat freely about the authority the Lord gave us for building you up rather than pulling you down, I will not be ashamed of it.

REFLECTION

  1. From Paul’s example here, what is supposed to be the “normal” way Christians exercise leadership over one another?  On a scale from 1 – 10, how well do you demonstrate Christ’s gentleness and meekness in leading others?
  2. What will you work on this week that demonstrates your interest in building people up and not pulling them down?

Prayer & Journaling:

Stay with God for a little longer.  Continue to converse with God and listen to what he wants to tell me.

What do you like better, to receive compliments or criticism?  Or to give compliments or criticism?  Go around the circle, asking each person to say 3 things to compliment the person sitting on your right.  Close by thanking God for the kindness and goodness shown during the sharing.

Proverbs for Today 20:10-13

10 Unequal weights and unequal measures
are both alike an abomination to the Lord.
11 Even a child makes himself known by his acts,
by whether his conduct is pure and upright.
12 The hearing ear and the seeing eye,
the Lord has made them both.
13 Love not sleep, lest you come to poverty;
open your eyes, and you will have plenty of bread.

260 Devotional, August 19, 2 Corithians 9

6Remember this: Whoever sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and whoever sows generously will also reap generously. 7Each man should give what he has decided in his heart to give, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver. 8And God is able to make all grace abound to you, so that in all things at all times, having all that you need, you will abound in every good work. 9As it is written:    “He has scattered abroad his gifts to the poor; his righteousness endures forever.” 10Now he who supplies seed to the sower and bread for food will also supply and increase your store of seed and will enlarge the harvest of your righteousness. 11You will be made rich in every way so that you can be generous on every occasion, and through us your generosity will result in thanksgiving to God.   12This service that you perform is not only supplying the needs of God’s people but is also overflowing in many expressions of thanks to God. 13Because of the service by which you have proved yourselves, men will praise God for the obedience that accompanies your confession of the gospel of Christ, and for your generosity in sharing with them and with everyone else. 14And in their prayers for you their hearts will go out to you, because of the surpassing grace God has given you. 15Thanks be to God for his indescribable gift!

REFLECTION

  1. God gave His Son because he “so loved the world”.  There is no higher motive for Christian giving than the example God set for us than this.  God gave freely and sacrificially, even delightfully.  Paul wrote of the highest motive for giving is love. “If I give away all I have, and if I deliver up my body to be burned, but have not love, I gain nothing.” (see 1 Cor 13:3).  We are to give joyfully.  The only way we’re going to give delightfully is to give out of LOVE.  Any other motive leaves one joyless.  In the long run, joyless giving does little good for Christ’s kingdom – and nothing for us.
  2. Paul reminded the Corinthians and us of the blessings that make Christians giving such a joy.  (1) Giving benefits us materially and spiritually. (vv8, 10)    (2) Giving permits us to bless others.(vv11,12)  (3) Giving stimulates others to pray for us.(vv13, 14)
  3. Do you give compulsively or with careful planning?  Are you a joyful giver, or a reluctant one?  Have you received the blessings Paul talked about?  In all the causes that you donate, is there a need for adjustment?

Prayer & Journaling:

Who is a cheerful giver? Make a list of reasons why giving helps us feel happy. See 8:1-9:5 for some ideas. Continue the discussion of a Food or Toy Drive from Ch 8.  If decided to go ahead with the idea, discuss and plan in detail how to bring it to reality. Now, are you cheerful?

Proverbs for Today 20:8-9

A king who sits on the throne of judgment
winnows all evil with his eyes.
Who can say, “I have made my heart pure;
I am clean from my sin”?

260 Devotional, August 16, 2 Corithians 8

1And now, brothers, we want you to know about the grace that God has given the Macedonian churches. 2Out of the most severe trial, their overflowing joy and their extreme poverty welled up in rich generosity. 3For I testify that they gave as much as they were able, and even beyond their ability. Entirely on their own, 4they urgently pleaded with us for the privilege of sharing in this service to the saints. 5And they did not do as we expected, but they gave themselves first to the Lord and then to us in keeping with God’s will. 6So we urged Titus, since he had earlier made a beginning, to bring also to completion this act of grace on your part. 7But just as you excel in everything—in faith, in speech, in knowledge, in complete earnestness and in your love for us—see that you also excel in this grace of giving.

8I am not commanding you, but I want to test the sincerity of your love by comparing it with the earnestness of others. 9For you know the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, that though he was rich, yet for your sakes he became poor, so that you through his poverty might become rich.

REFLECTION

  1. Living in a materialistic society, we can easily become dominated by a spirit of acquisition – of getting and storing and then guarding what we’ve gotten and stored. The biblical practice of giving is an offering of a portion of the fruits of our labour to God.  The offering is based upon the conviction that we would have gotten nothing from all our sweat and exertion if God hadn’t first given us the ground to use, the muscles to work, a brain to think, and a community to live and be employed in.  Everything comes to us as a gift from God.  Sunshine and rain.  Fruitfulness and fertility.  Strength and health.  They are all from God.  Our offering is an acknowledgment of that.  It’s a way of honouring him and giving thanks to him.
  2. How is your giving?  Do you always give with a thankful heart?

Prayer & Journaling:

Stay with God for a little longer.  Continue to converse with God and listen to what he wants to tell me.

If you have a prayer journal, as you listen to God, write down a few thoughts, questions, words, names, drawings, or anything that has come to your mind during this time.

Family Time (Begin this time by reading the passage above using a children’s Bible. If your children are younger, you may read vv1-5 only.)

Discuss: What did Paul say about the Macedonian Christians? What was their economic situation?  How did they think/feel when they helped the famine refugees in Jerusalem? How can you give “as much as you are able, and even beyond your ability”?  Ask each person to consider giving up one item of his/her own and donate it to someone in need, or start a Food or Toy Drive at church or school.

Proverbs for Today 20:5-7

The purpose in a man’s heart is like deep water,
but a man of understanding will draw it out.
Many a man proclaims his own steadfast love,
but a faithful man who can find?
The righteous who walks in his integrity—
blessed are his children after him!

260 Devotional, August 15, 2 Corithians 7

8Even if I caused you sorrow by my letter, I do not regret it. Though I did regret it—I see that my letter hurt you, but only for a little while— 9yet now I am happy, not because you were made sorry, but because your sorrow led you to repentance. For you became sorrowful as God intended and so were not harmed in any way by us. 10Godly sorrow brings repentance that leads to salvation and leaves no regret, but worldly sorrow brings death. 11See what this godly sorrow has produced in you: what earnestness, what eagerness to clear yourselves, what indignation, what alarm, what longing, what concern, what readiness to see justice done. At every point you have proved yourselves to be innocent in this matter. 12So even though I wrote to you, it was not on account of the one who did the wrong or of the injured party, but rather that before God you could see for yourselves how devoted to us you are. 13By all this we are encouraged.

REFLECTION

  1. The world’s sorrow usually is an “I’m sorry I got caught” kind of sorrow.  The individual is sorry for himself, and the consequences he now has to pay.  Godly sorrow is grief about the original act, and repentance – a commitment to turn from wrongdoing and to turn back toward God (v10).  We grieve, like Isaiah does in Isaiah 6, not only for ourselves, but also because we belong to a people who are sinful.  With this comes spiritual insight and maturity.
  2. Have you ever experienced this deep godly grief, for yourself, or for others?  Talk to God about it and listen to God’s response.

If your children are younger, you may read v8-9 only.)

Listening to other’s criticism or suggestions is sometimes difficult. We resist being told we are wrong. We resist being told how to do something. Often we can become better persons, stronger and wiser, when we listen to others’ ideas. Pray today that you will be open to loving comments meant to help you.

Proverbs for Today 20:1-4

Wine is a mocker, strong drink a brawler,
and whoever is led astray by it is not wise.
The terror of a king is like the growling of a lion;
whoever provokes him to anger forfeits his life.
It is an honor for a man to keep aloof from strife,
but every fool will be quarreling.
The sluggard does not plow in the autumn;
he will seek at harvest and have nothing.

260 Devotional, August 14, 2 Corithians 6

14Do not be yoked together with unbelievers. For what do righteousness and wickedness have in common? Or what fellowship can light have with darkness? 15What harmony is there between Christ and Belial? What does a believer have in common with an unbeliever? 16What agreement is there between the temple of God and idols? For we are the temple of the living God. As God has said: “I will live with them and walk among them, and I will be their God, and they will be my people.”
17“Therefore come out from them
and be separate, says the Lord.
Touch no unclean thing,
and I will receive you.”
18“I will be a Father to you,
and you will be my sons and daughters, says the Lord Almighty.”

REFLECTION

  1. Christians are to be completely separated unto the Lord, with that separation as sharp as the dividing line between light and darkness, between Christ and Satan, and between the temple of God and a shrine where idols are worshiped.  In short, we are to “purify ourselves from everything that contaminates body and spirit.” (7:1) God is our Father, but when we sin, sin’s contamination separates us from God.  Similarly, when sin comes into a relationship between two people, it’ll be felt like a grain of sand entering into the eye, the relationship will be affected.  So, the issue isn’t whether we could have intimate relationship with non-Christians, rather, if we want to maintain this close relationship with God the Father.  Our loving father is calling us: “I will be your father, and you shall be my sons and daughters.”  How do you respond?
  2. Imagine you are taking a walk with the Lord in the garden.  Listen to God telling you, “I will be your father, and you shall be my son/daughter.” What would you say to him right now?  The Lord is listening.  Speak to him slowly and listen to his fatherly talking, too.

If your children are younger, you may read v18 only.)

Have a father (or mother) with son or daughter walk in a park, on a beach, etc.  Direct the conversation to God walking with you as father & son or daughter.  How would that be like?  How close are you to God, the father?

Proverbs for Today 19:26-29

26 He who does violence to his father and chases away his mother
is a son who brings shame and reproach.
27 Cease to hear instruction, my son,
and you will stray from the words of knowledge.
28 A worthless witness mocks at justice,
and the mouth of the wicked devours iniquity.
29 Condemnation is ready for scoffers,
and beating for the backs of fools.

260 Devotional, August 13, 2 Corithians 5

11 Therefore, knowing the fear of the Lord, we persuade others. But what we are is known to God, and I hope it is known also to your conscience. 12 We are not commending ourselves to you again but giving you cause to boast about us, so that you may be able to answer those who boast about outward appearance and not about what is in the heart. 13 For if we are beside ourselves, it is for God; if we are in our right mind, it is for you. 14 For the love of Christ controls us, because we have concluded this: that one has died for all, therefore all have died; 15 and he died for all, that those who live might no longer live for themselves but for him who for their sake died and was raised.

16 From now on, therefore, we regard no one according to the flesh. Even though we once regarded Christ according to the flesh, we regard him thus no longer. 17 Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away; behold, the new has come. 18 All this is from God, who through Christ reconciled us to himself and gave us the ministry of reconciliation; 19 that is, in Christ God was reconciling the world to himself, not counting their trespasses against them, and entrusting to us the message of reconciliation. 20 Therefore, we are ambassadors for Christ, God making his appeal through us. We implore you on behalf of Christ, be reconciled to God. 21 For our sake he made him to be sin who knew no sin, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God.

REFLECTION

  1. Paul defends his ministry and message of reconciliation in this passage. He understood the nature of reconciliation – to bring into harmony with. Paul was sure that God, who in Christ has reconciled the world to Himself, will work in the believer’s life until he lives that life of righteousness that reveals the harmonious relationship with the Lord (v21). “God was reconciling the world to himself, not counting their trespasses against them” (v19). And Paul didn’t hold the Corinthians’ sins against them. Instead he communicated total confidence. He fully believes that the purpose for which Christ died for us will be accomplished, and the lives of believers will be brought into harmony (reconciled) with the righteousness of God.
  2. With this assurance, we are freed also not to count the sins of those in our family or in our faith. We’re freed not to hold their failures against them. And we’re free to communicate our confidence that, though they stumble, they will rise again. “Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away; behold, the new has come. ” (v17)
  3. Go back to Reflection #3 of Chapter 2. Use this passage as a base for your prayer for that person.  Pray that God will remove any critical and judgmental spirit in you.  And teach you to continue to contact and encourage this person and bring him/her back to the church family.

In the newspaper we may read an advertisement boasting a newly remodeled home – all new cabinets, new flooring, and so on. Paul tells us that when we accept Jesus as Saviour, we are new creations on the inside – “the old has gone, the new has come!” What does this mean? How are you a new creation because of what Christ has done?

Proverbs for Today 19:22-25

22 What is desired in a man is steadfast love,
and a poor man is better than a liar.
23 The fear of the Lord leads to life,
    and whoever has it rests satisfied;
he will not be visited by harm.
24 The sluggard buries his hand in the dish
and will not even bring it back to his mouth.
25 Strike a scoffer, and the simple will learn prudence;
reprove a man of understanding, and he will gain knowledge.

260 Devotional, August 12, 2 Corithians 4

1 Therefore, having this ministry by the mercy of God, we do not lose heart. But we have renounced disgraceful, underhanded ways. We refuse to practice cunning or to tamper with God’s word, but by the open statement of the truth we would commend ourselves to everyone’s conscience in the sight of God. And even if our gospel is veiled, it is veiled to those who are perishing. In their case the god of this world has blinded the minds of the unbelievers, to keep them from seeing the light of the gospel of the glory of Christ, who is the image of God.For what we proclaim is not ourselves, but Jesus Christ as Lord, with ourselves as your servants for Jesus’ sake. For God, who said, “Let light shine out of darkness,” has shone in our hearts to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ.

7But we have this treasure in jars of clay to show that this all-surpassing power is from God and not from us. 8We are hard pressed on every side, but not crushed; perplexed, but not in despair; 9persecuted, but not abandoned; struck down, but not destroyed. 10We always carry around in our body the death of Jesus, so that the life of Jesus may also be revealed in our body. 11For we who are alive are always being given over to death for Jesus’ sake, so that his life may be revealed in our mortal body. 12So then, death is at work in us, but life is at work in you.

REFLECTION

  1. Paul was contrasting the weak and ordinary character of the messenger with the overwhelming power of the message.  In fact, he was under pressure, perplexed, persecuted, knocked to the ground.  Everything in his experience reminded him that the dynamic power that had marked his ministry had not come from him.  He credited Jesus with the fact that despite his weaknesses he had not been crushed, nor drowned in despair, nor abandoned or destroyed.
  2. Don’t let a sense of personal weakness keep you from serving God.  The fact that we are weak is the backdrop against which the incomparable power of God is revealed.
  3. Sing quietly this traditional gospel song “Just a closer walk with Thee” as a prayer to God: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KStZ40DlOQc

I am weak but Thou art strong, Jesus keep me from all wrong
I’ll be satisfied as long as I walk, let me walk close to Thee
Just a closer walk with Thee, grant it Jesus is my plea
Daily walking close to Thee, oh let it be dear Lord let it be.

Ask everyone to name Paul’s list of tough times in vv7-9. And sing the song “Just a closer walk with thee” together. Parent may need to explain the lyrics and some of the words.

Proverbs for Today 19:19-21

19 A man of great wrath will pay the penalty,
for if you deliver him, you will only have to do it again.
20 Listen to advice and accept instruction,
that you may gain wisdom in the future.
21 Many are the plans in the mind of a man,
but it is the purpose of the Lord that will stand.

260 Devotional, August 9, 2 Corithians 3

12Therefore, since we have such a hope, we are very bold. 13We are not like Moses, who would put a veil over his face to keep the Israelites from gazing at it while the radiance was fading away. 14But their minds were made dull, for to this day the same veil remains when the old covenant is read. It has not been removed, because only in Christ is it taken away. 15Even to this day when Moses is read, a veil covers their hearts. 16But whenever anyone turns to the Lord, the veil is taken away. 17Now the Lord is the Spirit, and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom. 18And we, who with unveiled faces all reflect the Lord’s glory, are being transformed into his likeness with ever-increasing glory, which comes from the Lord, who is the Spirit.

REFLECTION

  1. When we rest in the splendour of God revealed by Christ, we find ourselves changed by it.  Gradually, by the power of the Spirit, we are being transformed into Christ’s likeness, the way that God had intended for us to be when he created us.
  2. Though there are still warts and blemishes all too visible, we are growing and changing.  In the process of the ever-increasing glory of the transformation taking place, “The Christian is the person who makes it easy for others to believe in God.”
  3. Pray: Lord, help me to reflect more of your glory and to become easier for others to believe in you.

Prayer & Journaling:

Family Time (Begin this time by reading the passage above using a children’s Bible. If your children are younger, you may read vv17-18 only.)

Gather the family in front of a big mirror, or give each person a hand-held mirror. Discuss the function of a mirror – to reflect the image. Paul said that we are like mirrors to reflect God’s glory. This is so that others may see Jesus in our lives. Is your life a truthful reflection of Jesus? Pray for God’s help.

Proverbs for Today 19:15-18

15 Slothfulness casts into a deep sleep,
and an idle person will suffer hunger.
16 Whoever keeps the commandment keeps his life;
he who despises his ways will die.
17 Whoever is generous to the poor lends to the Lord,
and he will repay him for his deed.
18 Discipline your son, for there is hope;
do not set your heart on putting him to death.

260 Devotional, August 8, 2 Corithians 2

Now if anyone has caused pain, he has caused it not to me, but in some measure—not to put it too severely—to all of you. For such a one, this punishment by the majority is enough, so you should rather turn to forgive and comfort him, or he may be overwhelmed by excessive sorrow. So I beg you to reaffirm your love for him. For this is why I wrote, that I might test you and knowwhether you are obedient in everything. 10 Anyone whom you forgive, I also forgive. Indeed, what I have forgiven, if I have forgiven anything, has been for your sake in the presence of Christ, 11 so that we would not be outwitted by Satan; for we are not ignorant of his designs.

REFLECTION

  1. In this passage, Paul refers to the discipline of a member of the church, possibly because of a gross sexual sin (see 1Co 5:1). How does Paul’s handling of this problem affirm his love not only for the Corinthians but also for the man who had sinned?
  2. How would Paul’s approach to discipline be one that would still allow the person confronted to hear God’s affirmation in Christ? It is important for the community to pursue forgiveness in order to prevent Satan from accomplishing his schemes against the Church.
  3. Do you know any believer that may need to re-enter the church community right now?  If so, ask God for wisdom and love to forgive, comfort and restore this person into God’s family.

Family Time (Begin this time by reading the passage above using a children’s Bible. If your children are younger, you may read vv10-11 only.)

Sometimes people say things which hurt us or make us feel unhappy. Paul told his friends in the church that they should forgive people who hurt them or say unkind things. Is this easy or difficult to do? How do you feel? Do you need to forgive someone? Will you?

Proverbs for Today 19:12-14

12 A king’s wrath is like the growling of a lion,
but his favor is like dew on the grass.
13 A foolish son is ruin to his father,
and a wife’s quarreling is a continual dripping of rain.
14 House and wealth are inherited from fathers,
but a prudent wife is from the Lord.

260 Devotional, August 7, 2 Corithians 1

For as we share abundantly in Christ’s sufferings, so through Christ we share abundantly in comfort too. If we are afflicted, it is for your comfort and salvation; and if we are comforted, it is for your comfort, which you experience when you patiently endure the same sufferings that we suffer. Our hope for you is unshaken, for we know that as you share in our sufferings, you will also share in our comfort.

For we do not want you to be unaware, brothers, of the affliction we experienced in Asia. For we were so utterly burdened beyond our strength that we despaired of life itself. Indeed, we felt that we had received the sentence of death. But that was to make us rely not on ourselves but on God who raises the dead. 10 He delivered us from such a deadly peril, and he will deliver us. On him we have set our hope that he will deliver us again. 11 You also must help us by prayer, so that many will give thanks on our behalf for the blessing granted us through the prayers of many.

REFLECTION

  1. Christians may suffer because of the faith that we have.  But when we suffer and are persecuted because of Jesus, we can also be comforted because we know that God is at work, seeking reconciliation between God and men and that Christ is the one who comforts us.  When we suffer for the gospel, we are put into a position of needing to be dependent on God.
  2. When was the last time you felt like in a pressure cooker?  What happened?  In what ways have you experienced God’s comfort? How does your experience of God’s comfort enable you to comfort others?
  3. Think of someone you know who needs to experience God’s comfort.  Ask God to comfort that person and to use you in offering comfort.  Spend a few minutes praying for this person.  Give him/her a call in a few days, or write him/her an email asking how things are and telling him/her that you are praying for him/her.

Prayer & Journaling:

Stay with God for a little longer.  Continue to converse with God and listen to what he wants to tell me.

Family Time (Begin this time by reading the passage above using a children’s Bible. If your children are younger, you may read vv3-4 only.)

The comfort we receive from God in our distress will help us to comfort others. Identify needs in your community which your family may be able to meet. What can each family member do to help? After your discussion, you may want to make plans to carry out some ways to help out.

Proverbs for Today 19:8-11

Whoever gets sense loves his own soul;
he who keeps understanding will discover good.
A false witness will not go unpunished,
and he who breathes out lies will perish.
10 It is not fitting for a fool to live in luxury,
much less for a slave to rule over princes.
11 Good sense makes one slow to anger,
and it is his glory to overlook an offense.

260 Devotional, August 5, 1 Corithians 15

50I declare to you, brothers, that flesh and blood cannot inherit the kingdom of God, nor does the perishable inherit the imperishable. 51Listen, I tell you a mystery: We will not all sleep, but we will all be changed— 52in a flash, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trumpet. For the trumpet will sound, the dead will be raised imperishable, and we will be changed. 53For the perishable must clothe itself with the imperishable, and the mortal with immortality. 54When the perishable has been clothed with the imperishable, and the mortal with immortality, then the saying that is written will come true: “Death has been swallowed up in victory.”
55“Where, O death, is your victory?
Where, O death, is your sting?” 56The sting of death is sin, and the power of sin is the law. 57But thanks be to God! He gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.

58Therefore, my dear brothers, stand firm. Let nothing move you. Always give yourselves fully to the work of the Lord, because you know that your labor in the Lord is not in vain.

REFLECTION

  1. The author of Ecclesiastes looked back over a busy and successful life, and declared it meaningless. All he had accomplished meant nothing, he complained, for he would die. And what he had built would be left to another (Ecc 2:17-23).
  2. However, Paul shouted out in triumph. What we accomplish for Jesus is never in vain. Death is not the end! Death is a defeated enemy, to be swallowed up in victory when God clothes us with immortality. All that we accomplish for the Lord will reflect His glory for eternity.
  3. Have you ever pondered what death will be like for you? How do you feel about it? If someone is writing a tribute for your memorial, what would be written in it?  How would you like people to write the letter announcing your death?
  4. Express your feelings to Christ. Stay quiet to allow the Holy Spirit to minister to you now.

Proverbs for Today 19:1-4

1 Better is a poor person who walks in his integrity
than one who is crooked in speech and is a fool.
Desire without knowledge is not good,
and whoever makes haste with his feet misses his way.
When a man’s folly brings his way to ruin,
his heart rages against the Lord.
Wealth brings many new friends,
but a poor man is deserted by his friend.

260 Devotional, August 2, 1 Corithians 14

6Now, brothers, if I come to you and speak in tongues, what good will I be to you, unless I bring you some revelation or knowledge or prophecy or word of instruction? 7Even in the case of lifeless things that make sounds, such as the flute or harp, how will anyone know what tune is being played unless there is a distinction in the notes? 8Again, if the trumpet does not sound a clear call, who will get ready for battle? 9So it is with you. Unless you speak intelligible words with your tongue, how will anyone know what you are saying? You will just be speaking into the air. 10Undoubtedly there are all sorts of languages in the world, yet none of them is without meaning. 11If then I do not grasp the meaning of what someone is saying, I am a foreigner to the speaker, and he is a foreigner to me. 12So it is with you. Since you are eager to have spiritual gifts, try to excel in gifts that build up the church.   13For this reason anyone who speaks in a tongue should pray that he may interpret what he says. 14For if I pray in a tongue, my spirit prays, but my mind is unfruitful. 15So what shall I do? I will pray with my spirit, but I will also pray with my mind; I will sing with my spirit, but I will also sing with my mind. 16If you are praising God with your spirit, how can one who finds himself among those who do not understand say “Amen” to your thanksgiving, since he does not know what you are saying? 17You may be giving thanks well enough, but the other man is not edified. 17 For you may be giving thanks well enough, but the other person is not being built up. 18 I thank God that I speak in tongues more than all of you. 19 Nevertheless, in church I would rather speak five words with my mind in order to instruct others, than ten thousand words in a tongue.

REFLECTION

  1. Practicing the gift of “speaking in tongues” has been a divisive issue in many churches. Paul argued that intelligible speech is to have priority in church meetings where “tongues” has limited value. And congregational participation during services is to be done orderly.
  2. When Christians gather we minister to each other.  In prayer, praise, teaching, and sharing, God can and does use what we say to build up His church.  Therefore, spiritual gifts are not given for the benefit of the possessor.  The purpose of all spiritual gifts is to build up the whole Body of Christ and those the Body serves.
  3. What gifts do you have and what can you do to serve fellow-believers and help build up the church?

Prayer & Journaling:

Stay with God for a little longer.  Continue to converse with God and listen to what he wants to tell me.

If you have a prayer journal, as you listen to God, write down a few thoughts, questions, words, names, drawings, or anything that has come to your mind during this time.

Family Time (Begin this time by reading the passage above using a children’s Bible. If your children are younger, you may read v26 only.)

Family Worship, as well as worship at church, can include a variety of experiences. Following Paul’s suggestion, plan an orderly worship experience. Consider including a favorite hymn, a Bible verse, and some statements about the verse. Pray for your family and your church.

Proverbs for Today 18:22-24

22 He who finds a wife finds a good thing
and obtains favor from the Lord.
23 The poor use entreaties,
    but the rich answer roughly.
24 A man of many companions may come to ruin,
but there is a friend who sticks closer than a brother.

260 Devotional, August 1, 1 Corithians 13

4Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. 5It is not rude, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. 6Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. 7It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres.

8Love never fails. But where there are prophecies, they will cease; where there are tongues, they will be stilled; where there is knowledge, it will pass away. 9For we know in part and we prophesy in part, 10but when perfection comes, the imperfect disappears. 11When I was a child, I talked like a child, I thought like a child, I reasoned like a child. When I became a man, I put childish ways behind me. 12Now we see but a poor reflection as in a mirror; then we shall see face to face. Now I know in part; then I shall know fully, even as I am fully known.

13And now these three remain: faith, hope and love. But the greatest of these is love.

REFLECTION

  1. In this chapter, Paul not only defines love but shows us why this is the most excellent way to relate to anyone—especially to members of the family of God.
  2. True spirituality has nothing to do with one’s gifts, training, or performing skills.  The truly spiritual person is the individual whose attitude and actions express love.
  3. Read this passage slowly and meditatively. Allow the words to sink in and compare each phrase to your own understanding and action of love.
  4. Copy verses 4-8a on an index card, memorize it, or bring it out to review often.  Examine your own attitude and actions often to see if there is any love expressed.

If your children are younger, you may read vv4-8a only.)

Copy vv4-8a on a piece of cardboard. As a family, learn to memorize it together. Post it up where it’s easy for all to see. Review it often, ie. before or after each dinner. Perhaps, parents consider a small prize when a child can memorize it.

Proverbs for Today 18:19-21

19 A brother offended is more unyielding than a strong city,
and quarreling is like the bars of a castle.
20 From the fruit of a man’s mouth his stomach is satisfied;
he is satisfied by the yield of his lips.
21 Death and life are in the power of the tongue,
and those who love it will eat its fruits.

260 Devotional, July 31, 1 Corithians 12

12 Just as a body, though one, has many parts, but all its many parts form one body, so it is with Christ. 13 For we were all baptized byone Spirit so as to form one body—whether Jews or Gentiles, slave or free—and we were all given the one Spirit to drink. 14 Even so the body is not made up of one part but of many.

15 Now if the foot should say, “Because I am not a hand, I do not belong to the body,” it would not for that reason stop being part of the body. 16 And if the ear should say, “Because I am not an eye, I do not belong to the body,” it would not for that reason stop being part of the body. 17 If the whole body were an eye, where would the sense of hearing be? If the whole body were an ear, where would the sense of smell be? 18 But in fact God has placed the parts in the body, every one of them, just as he wanted them to be. 19 If they were all one part, where would the body be? 20 As it is, there are many parts, but one body.

21 The eye cannot say to the hand, “I don’t need you!” And the head cannot say to the feet, “I don’t need you!” 22 On the contrary, those parts of the body that seem to be weaker are indispensable, 23 and the parts that we think are less honorable we treat with special honor. And the parts that are unpresentable are treated with special modesty, 24 while our presentable parts need no special treatment. But God has put the body together, giving greater honor to the parts that lacked it, 25 so that there should be no division in the body, but that its parts should have equal concern for each other. 26 If one part suffers, every part suffers with it; if one part is honored, every part rejoices with it.

REFLECTION

  1. Paul used the image of the body to explain our relation to one another.  We’re all parts of the body of Christ.  Whoever you are or whatever your spiritual gifts are, you are “indispensable” (v22) to the others in your church, and in the church.
  2. What might make some members of your church feel useless or envious of other parts of the body? According to Paul, how can we make every part of the body feel special?
  3. What is your reaction when some other Christian gets recognition and honour? Or when someone is suffering?  Do you rejoice with those who rejoice, weep with those who weep? Or are you jealous of those who rejoice and apathetic to the weeping?

Prayer & Journaling:

Stay with God for a little longer.  Continue to converse with God and listen to what he wants to tell me.

If you have a prayer journal, as you listen to God, write down a few thoughts, questions, words, names, drawings, or anything that has come to your mind during this time.

Family Time (Begin this time by reading the passage above using a children’s Bible. If your children are younger, you may read vv14-20 only.)

Every Christian has a place of service in God’s church, and every place of service is important to God. Lead family members in discovering their places of service. Pray that God will give energy and wisdom to do the service well.

Proverbs for Today 18: 16-18

16 A man’s gift makes room for him
and brings him before the great.
17 The one who states his case first seems right,
until the other comes and examines him.
18 The lot puts an end to quarrels
    and decides between powerful contenders.

260 Devotional, July 30, 1 Corithians 11

17 But in the following instructions I do not commend you, because when you come together it is not for the better but for the worse. 18 For, in the first place, when you come together as a church, I hear that there are divisions among you. And I believe it in part, 19 for there must be factions among you in order that those who are genuine among you may be recognized. 20 When you come together, it is not the Lord’s supper that you eat. 21 For in eating, each one goes ahead with his own meal. One goes hungry, another gets drunk. 22 What! Do you not have houses to eat and drink in? Or do you despise the church of God and humiliate those who have nothing? What shall I say to you? Shall I commend you in this? No, I will not.

23For I received from the Lord what I also passed on to you: The Lord Jesus, on the night he was betrayed, took bread, 24and when he had given thanks, he broke it and said, “This is my body, which is for you; do this in remembrance of me.” 25In the same way, after supper he took the cup, saying, “This cup is the new covenant in my blood; do this, whenever you drink it, in remembrance of me.” 26For whenever you eat this bread and drink this cup, you proclaim the Lord’s death until he comes.

27Therefore, whoever eats the bread or drinks the cup of the Lord in an unworthy manner will be guilty of sinning against the body and blood of the Lord. 28A man ought to examine himself before he eats of the bread and drinks of the cup. 29For anyone who eats and drinks without recognizing the body of the Lord eats and drinks judgment on himself. 30That is why many among you are weak and sick, and a number of you have fallen asleep. 31But if we judged ourselves, we would not come under judgment. 32When we are judged by the Lord, we are being disciplined so that we will not be condemned with the world.

REFLECTION

  1. This chapter deals with the women’s head coverings (vv2-16) and the above passage regarding the Lord’s Supper (Communion).
  2. The communion service is a memorial.  As the Israelites ate the Passover meal, each family relived the experience of its ancestors.  Today through the bread and cup, we return to the foot of the cross.  So, in the communion service, as we are united with Christ through faith, we share His death and His resurrection.   “Do this in remembrance” invites us to experience the awesome moment when our salvation was won.  It invites us to experience the holy God and to offer Him our thanks, our worship, and our praise.
  3. If possible, kneel down to pray.  Tell God all your gratitude and other emotions for all that Jesus has done on the cross for you.  During next communion service, remember to take Communion “in remembrance” of Jesus and His Sacrificial Love.

Proverbs for Today 18:12-15

12 Before destruction a man’s heart is haughty,
    but humility comes before honor.
13 If one gives an answer before he hears,
it is his folly and shame.
14 A man’s spirit will endure sickness,
but a crushed spirit who can bear?
15 An intelligent heart acquires knowledge,
and the ear of the wise seeks knowledge.

260 Devotional, July 29, 1 Corithians 10

14 Therefore, my beloved, flee from idolatry. 15 I speak as to sensible people; judge for yourselves what I say. 16 The cup of blessing that we bless, is it not a participation in the blood of Christ? The bread that we break, is it not a participation in the body of Christ? 17 Because there is one bread, we who are many are one body, for we all partake of the one bread. 18 Consider the people of Israel: are not those who eat the sacrifices participants in the altar?19 What do I imply then? That food offered to idols is anything, or that an idol is anything? 20 No, I imply that what pagans sacrifice they offer to demons and not to God. I do not want you to be participants with demons.21 You cannot drink the cup of the Lord and the cup of demons. You cannot partake of the table of the Lord andthe table of demons. 22 Shall we provoke the Lord to jealousy? Are we stronger than he?

23 “All things are lawful,” but not all things are helpful. “All things are lawful,” but not all things build up. 24 Let no one seek his own good, but the good of his neighbor.25 Eat whatever is sold in the meat market without raising any question on the ground of conscience. 26 For “the earth is the Lord’s, and the fullness thereof.” 27 If one of the unbelievers invites you to dinner and you are disposed to go, eat whatever is set before you without raising any question on the ground of conscience. 28 But if someone says to you, “This has been offered in sacrifice,” then do not eat it, for the sake of the one who informed you, and for the sake of conscience— 29 I do not mean your conscience, but his. For why should my liberty be determined by someone else’s conscience? 30 If I partake with thankfulness, why am I denounced because of thatfor which I give thanks?

31 So, whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God. 32 Give no offense to Jews or to Greeks or to the church of God, 33 just as I try to please everyone in everything I do, not seeking my own advantage, but that of many, that they may be saved.

REFLECTION

  1. Again, the Corinthians were divided. Some held a very strict rule that they would not sit down to a meal if the meat had been purchased at a pagan meat market. Others exercised their new found freedom so liberally that they could eat the Lord’s supper (communion) and then commit sexual immorality.
  2. Paul reached to both groups of believers and gave them the guideline to do everything “for the glory of God” (v31). Christians are free because we know the truth in Christ. But willing always to surrender any freedom that will benefit believer or unbeliever alike.
  3. What “questionable” practices have you wrestled with personally? How can the principles discussed in this passage guide your behavior in areas that might be “permissible” but not beneficial?

Prayer & Journaling:

Temptation is no excuse for immorality. According to Paul’s teaching, God will not allow us to be tempted beyond our power to resist. Pray that you may avoid temptation. Pray also that God will help you when you are tempted so that you will not sin.

Proverbs for Today 18:8-11

The words of a whisperer are like delicious morsels;
they go down into the inner parts of the body.
Whoever is slack in his work
is a brother to him who destroys.
10 The name of the Lord is a strong tower;
the righteous man runs into it and is safe.
11 A rich man’s wealth is his strong city,
and like a high wall in his imagination.

260 Devotional, July 26, 1 Corithians 9

16 For if I preach the gospel, that gives me no ground for boasting. For necessity is laid upon me. Woe to me if I do not preach the gospel! 17 For if I do this of my own will, I have a reward, but if not of my own will, I am still entrusted with a stewardship. 18 What then is my reward? That in my preaching I may present the gospel free of charge, so as not to make full use of my right in the gospel.

19 For though I am free from all, I have made myself a servant to all, that I might win more of them. 20 To the Jews I became as a Jew, in order to win Jews. To those under the law I became as one under the law (though not being myself under the law) that I might win those under the law. 21 To those outside the law I became as one outside the law (not being outside the law of God but under the law of Christ) that I might win those outside the law. 22 To the weak I became weak, that I might win the weak. I have become all things to all people, that by all means I might save some. 23 I do it all for the sake of the gospel, that I may share with them in its blessings.

24 Do you not know that in a race all the runners run, but only one receives the prize? So run that you may obtain it.25 Every athlete exercises self-control in all things. They do it to receive a perishable wreath, but we an imperishable. 26 So I do not run aimlessly; I do not box as one beating the air. 27 But I discipline my body and keep it under control, lest after preaching to others I myself should be disqualified.

REFLECTION

  1. Paul presented himself as one who had surrendered many personal rights for the benefit of others. Paul wanted to make preaching the gospel a gift, not a purchase (v18). He wanted to identify with others, so as not to personally offend anyone who needed to hear the gospel (vv22-23).
  2. In giving up the rights mentioned in chapters 8—9, how are we like athletes in training (vv. 24-27)? Right now, in the race of the gospel, are you a runner or a spectator?  Do you long for the crown (trophy) that God is going to reward you?  Talk to God about your role right now, ask Him to help you prepare for the race.
  3. 3.        If we are as eager to serve God, as sensitive to others, and as focused on eternity, our “rights” will seem unimportant to us as well. (Larry Richards)

Do you participate in any type of sports? How do you prepare for a race or a game? Discuss. You have a goal to win the game or race. Paul says Christians have a race to run. And God has the best prize for us at the end. Our preparation is the spiritual disciplines: reading the Bible, prayer, worship, sharing the gospel, etc. By doing these disciplines, we’ll be prepared to win the race.

Proverbs for Today 18:5-7

It is not good to be partial to the wicked
or to deprive the righteous of justice.
A fool’s lips walk into a fight,
and his mouth invites a beating.
A fool’s mouth is his ruin,
and his lips are a snare to his soul.

260 Devotional, July 25, 1 Corithians 8

1Now concerning food offered to idols: we know that “all of us possess knowledge.” This “knowledge” puffs up, but love builds up. If anyone imagines that he knows something, he does not yet know as he ought to know. But if anyone loves God, he is known by God.

Therefore, as to the eating of food offered to idols, we know that “an idol has no real existence,” and that “there is no God but one.” For although there may be so-called gods in heaven or on earth—as indeed there are many “gods” and many “lords”— yet for us there is one God, the Father, from whom are all things and for whom we exist, and one Lord, Jesus Christ, through whom are all things and through whom we exist.

However, not all possess this knowledge. But some, through former association with idols, eat food as really offered to an idol, and their conscience, being weak, is defiled. Food will not commend us to God. We are no worse off if we do not eat, and no better off if we do.But take care that this right of yours does not somehow become a stumbling block to the weak. 10 For if anyone sees you who have knowledge eating in an idol’s temple, will he not be encouraged, if his conscience is weak, to eat food offered to idols? 11 And so by your knowledge this weak person is destroyed, the brother for whom Christ died. 12 Thus, sinning against your brothers and wounding their conscience when it is weak, you sin against Christ.13 Therefore, if food makes my brother stumble, I will never eat meat, lest I make my brother stumble.

REFLECTION

  1. In Corinth most fresh meat was purchased at temple markets, which sold meat offered to the deity they honoured. Some Christians in Corinth argues that to buy meat at such market was participating in idolatry. Others thought this view foolish. After all, the gods represented by the idols weren’t real. Paul affirmed the right of the Corinthians to eat such meat, but urged those who feel free to do so to consider surrendering this “right” in any situation where a weaker brother’s conscience might be harmed.
  2. Is there something in your life that when your exercise your freedom, it becomes a stumbling block for others?  Drinking? Clothing? Music? Lifestyle? Political viewpoints? Legalism?
  3. Prayer: “Lord, is there someone stumbled because of my freedom?”  As you pause to listen, ask the Holy Spirit to bring the person to mind and pray for wisdom and grace to face it.

Prayer & Journaling:

Stay with God for a little longer.  Continue to converse with God and listen to what he wants to tell me.

You may have heard someone say, “Don’t do as I do, but do as I say do.” Is that what Paul said? He said that he could not do anything that would cause someone to do wrong by watching his actions. What about our actions? Are we doing things or saying things others should not see? What should we do about it?

Proverbs for Today 18:1-4

Whoever isolates himself seeks his own desire;
he breaks out against all sound judgment.
A fool takes no pleasure in understanding,
but only in expressing his opinion.
When wickedness comes, contempt comes also,
    and with dishonor comes disgrace.
The words of a man’s mouth are deep waters;
the fountain of wisdom is a bubbling brook.

260 Devotional, July 24, 1 Corithians 7

17Nevertheless, each one should retain the place in life that the Lord assigned to him and to which God has called him. This is the rule I lay down in all the churches. 18Was a man already circumcised when he was called? He should not become uncircumcised. Was a man uncircumcised when he was called? He should not be circumcised. 19Circumcision is nothing and uncircumcision is nothing. Keeping God’s commands is what counts. 20Each one should remain in the situation which he was in when God called him. 21Were you a slave when you were called? Don’t let it trouble you—although if you can gain your freedom, do so. 22For he who was a slave when he was called by the Lord is the Lord’s freedman; similarly, he who was a free man when he was called is Christ’s slave. 23You were bought at a price; do not become slaves of men. 24Brothers, each man, as responsible to God, should remain in the situation God called him to.

32 I want you to be free from anxieties. The unmarried man is anxious about the things of the Lord, how to please the Lord. 33 But the married man is anxious about worldly things, how to please his wife, 34 and his interests are divided. And the unmarried or betrothed woman is anxious about the things of the Lord, how to be holy in body and spirit. But the married woman is anxious about worldly things, how to please her husband. 35 I say this for your own benefit, not to lay any restraint upon you, but to promote good order and to secure your undivided devotion to the Lord.

REFLECTION

  1. In chapter 6 Paul dealt with those who justified a permissive lifestyle in the name of Christian freedom. In this chapter he battles on the opposite front. Some Corinthians claimed sex was sinful—or at least a second-class diversion—even in marriage. In response Paul answers questions about marriage, sexuality and singleness.
  2. We’d like to think that our married status, vocational status, economic status make us who we are.  These are important but not essential raw materials which God uses to shape his life in us.  So, Paul told them don’t wish to be someplace else or with someone else.  God, not your marital status or any other thing, defines your life (v17).
  3. What are some of the things that you’d like to have changed in your life?  Would verses 17 & 19 provide some direction and principle?  Tell God about it and, if needed, contact your pastor for further help.
  4. Whether you have never been married, are currently married, divorced, or widowed, what is one way you can show your “undivided devotion” to the Lord this week (v35)?

Prayer & Journaling:

What to better prepare your children for marriage than to encourage prayer for themselves and their future mate. Have a conversation of what your child would want in his/her marriage.  Talk about God’s involvement in marriage.  Pray for each one and parent’s marriage.

Proverbs for Today 17:25-28

25 A foolish son is a grief to his father
and bitterness to her who bore him.
26 To impose a fine on a righteous man is not good,
nor to strike the noble for their uprightness.
27 Whoever restrains his words has knowledge,
and he who has a cool spirit is a man of understanding.
28 Even a fool who keeps silent is considered wise;
when he closes his lips, he is deemed intelligent.

260 Devotional, July 23, 1 Corithians 6

9 Or do you not know that wrongdoers will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived: Neither the sexually immoral nor idolaters nor adulterers nor men who have sex with men 10 nor thieves nor the greedy nor drunkards nor slanderers nor swindlers will inherit the kingdom of God. 11 And that is what some of you were. But you were washed, you were sanctified, you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and by the Spirit of our God.

12 “I have the right to do anything,” you say—but not everything is beneficial. “I have the right to do anything”—but I will not be mastered by anything. 13 You say, “Food for the stomach and the stomach for food, and God will destroy them both.” The body, however, is not meant for sexual immorality but for the Lord, and the Lord for the body. 14 By his power God raised the Lord from the dead, and he will raise us also. 15 Do you not know that your bodies are members of Christ himself? Shall I then take the members of Christ and unite them with a prostitute? Never! 16 Do you not know that he who unites himself with a prostitute is one with her in body? For it is said, “The two will become one flesh.” 17 But whoever is united with the Lord is one with him in spirit.

18 Flee from sexual immorality. All other sins a person commits are outside the body, but whoever sins sexually, sins against their own body. 19 Do you not know that your bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own; 20 you were bought at a price. Therefore honor God with your bodies.

REFLECTION

  1. Paul instructed the Corinthians that legal cases should be settled within church, as befits saints while sexual immorality is unthinkable because of the believer’s union with Christ.
  2. The newspaper, television and roadside billboard are all covered with sexual images.  How do you see these things?  Nothing wrong? Uneasy but couldn’t help it? Disgusted and turned away?
  3. Have a quiet time with God. Silently consider your own body.  It’s for God and belongs to God and united with God.  Listen to what the Holy Spirit is saying to you, pointing out any unclean, unjust behaviour or thought.  Ask for forgiveness and God’s help to honor God with your body.

If your children are younger, you may read vv18-20 only.)

God is concerned for the well-being of the whole person, the body as well as the soul. How can you honour God with your body? How might you dishonour him? Why is the body so important to spiritual relationship? Can the spirit of a person serve God without the body’s help? Why? Why not?

Proverbs for Today 17:22-24

22 A joyful heart is good medicine,
but a crushed spirit dries up the bones.
23 The wicked accepts a bribe in secret
to pervert the ways of justice.
24 The discerning sets his face toward wisdom,
but the eyes of a fool are on the ends of the earth.

260 Devotional, July 22, 1 Corithians 5

1 It is actually reported that there is sexual immorality among you, and of a kind that is not tolerated even among pagans, for a man has his father’s wife. And you are arrogant! Ought you not rather to mourn? Let him who has done this be removed from among you.

For though absent in body, I am present in spirit; and as if present, I have already pronounced judgment on the one who did such a thing. When you are assembled in the name of the Lord Jesus and my spirit is present, with the power of our Lord Jesus, you are to deliver this man to Satan for the destruction of the flesh, so that his spirit may be saved in the day of the Lord.

Your boasting is not good. Do you not know that a little leaven leavens the whole lump? Cleanse out the old leaven that you may be a new lump, as you really are unleavened. For Christ, our Passover lamb, has been sacrificed. Let us therefore celebrate the festival, not with the old leaven, the leaven of malice and evil, but with the unleavened bread of sincerity and truth.

I wrote to you in my letter not to associate with sexually immoral people— 10 not at all meaning the sexually immoral of this world, or the greedy and swindlers, or idolaters, since then you would need to go out of the world. 11 But now I am writing to you not to associate with anyone who bears the name of brother if he is guilty of sexual immorality or greed, or is an idolater, reviler, drunkard, or swindler—not even to eat with such a one.12 For what have I to do with judging outsiders? Is it not those inside the church whom you are to judge? 13 God judges those outside. “Purge the evil person from among you.”

REFLECTION

  1. In chapters 1—4 Paul dealt with divisions in the church. Now he begins to focus on serious moral problems in Corinth. Incest and drunkenness during Communion are hardly what we hope to find in church. But we must remember that growing churches are not always filled with hand-picked Christians, but rather with a mixed collection of sinners being saved.
  2. The Word of God is relentless.  It insists that we face up to our sin whether that sin is indolence, idolatry, or immorality. For if that diseased part of the body is not dealt with, it puts the entire body at risk.  Paul urged them to sever all relationships with those sinning people.  His purpose is for the protection of the church lest they be led into the same sinful trap.
  3. Why do you think so few churches today practice discipline of those who commit an immorality?
  4. When you wanted to point out inappropriate behaviours of someone in the church or cell group, ask the Holy Spirit to remind you to examine your own behaviour and thought life first.  Then, give you a deep mourning for them and their sins.
  5. What will happen to your attitude when you mourn for them and others?  How would this affect the prevention of sin’s “yeast effect”?

Prayer & Journaling:

Stay with God for a little longer.  Continue to converse with God and listen to what he wants to tell me.

If you have a prayer journal, as you listen to God, write down a few thoughts, questions, words, names, drawings, or anything that has come to your mind during this time.

Family Time (Begin this time by reading the passage above using a children’s Bible. If your children are younger, you may read vv6-8 only.)

If it’s possible, plan to make a home-made bread and ask all members of the family to participate.  As you collect and put each ingredients, explain the function of yeast (or leaven).  Explain how sin is like yeast to grow and causing the whole dough to enlarge. And how sin, left un-dealt with, will also affect the whole family or church making it unclean before God. Therefore, if we sin, we need to confess our sins right away, not to hide it. Then, we will have God’s forgiveness and peace in heart.

Proverbs for Today 17:19-21

19 Whoever loves transgression loves strife;
he who makes his door high seeks destruction.
20 A man of crooked heart does not discover good,
and one with a dishonest tongue falls into calamity.
21 He who sires a fool gets himself sorrow,
and the father of a fool has no joy.

260 Devotional, July 19, 1 Corithians 4

Before you begin today’s reading and reflection, take a few minutes to create or find a “sacred space”. If you’re in your room, make yourself a small space with as few distractions as possible. Put aside any books, music, magazines; turn off your phone; get away from your email/facebook; turn off your music; etc.

Now, pull out your Bible, and as you take some deep breaths, pray this short prayer: “Lord, help me be still and listen to your voice now and throughout this day and the next. Amen.”

(You can choose to read the whole chapter, or just the passage that is shown)

I have applied all these things to myself and Apollos for your benefit, brothers, that you may learn by us not to go beyond what is written, that none of you may be puffed up in favor of one against another. For who sees anything different in you? What do you have that you did not receive? If then you received it, why do you boast as if you did not receive it?  8Already you have all you want! Already you have become rich! You have become kings—and that without us! How I wish that you really had become kings so that we might be kings with you! 9For it seems to me that God has put us apostles on display at the end of the procession, like men condemned to die in the arena. We have been made a spectacle to the whole universe, to angels as well as to men. 10We are fools for Christ, but you are so wise in Christ! We are weak, but you are strong! You are honored, we are dishonored! 11To this very hour we go hungry and thirsty, we are in rags, we are brutally treated, we are homeless. 12We work hard with our own hands. When we are cursed, we bless; when we are persecuted, we endure it; 13when we are slandered, we answer kindly. Up to this moment we have become the scum of the earth, the refuse of the world.

14 I do not write these things to make you ashamed, but to admonish you as my beloved children. 15 For though you have countless guides in Christ, you do not have many fathers. For I became your father in Christ Jesus through the gospel. 16 I urge you, then, be imitators of me.17 That is why I sent you Timothy, my beloved and faithful child in the Lord, to remind you of my ways in Christ, as I teach them everywhere in every church.

REFLECTION

  1. In this chapter, Paul continues to encourage the believers to honour all God’s servants – including Paul and respond to their instruction.
  2. Quarreling over leaders in Corinth was an expression of pride. The faction parties wanted to feel superior, so they claimed to follow the more polished and powerful preacher!
  3. With rhetoric full of sarcasm and irony Paul contrasted his own way of life with theirs in vv8-13. The Corinthian Christians (in their own eyes) were rich, self-satisfied, wise, strong, honoured. Paul was viewed by them as a poor fool, poverty-stricken, weak, dishonoured.
  4. However, even the unspiritual Corinthians had to realize that in service to Christ, Paul towered above them all. They even owed their faith to the apostle, who “became your father in Christ Jesus through the gospel”. As a father had the right to set the pattern for his son’s way of life, Paul urged his spiritual children to discard their pride, grow out of spiritual infancy, and “imitate me” (v16).
  5. How would imitating Paul’s way of life (vv. 16-17) require changes in your thinking and actions?
  6. Thank God for the leaders who have formed and impacted your Christian faith and walk.

If your children are younger, you may read vv10-13 only.)

All of us at one time or another feel we have been wronged by someone else. What makes Christians unique is the response they are told to make. Identify someone who has treated you unfairly. Make plans to do all that is within your power to make peace with that person. Ask God’s help as you go.

Proverbs for Today 17:15-18

15 He who justifies the wicked and he who condemns the righteous
are both alike an abomination to the Lord.
16 Why should a fool have money in his hand to buy wisdom
    when he has no sense?
17 A friend loves at all times,
and a brother is born for adversity.
18 One who lacks sense gives a pledge
and puts up security in the presence of his neighbor.

1 But I, brothers, could not address you as spiritual people, but as people of the flesh, as infants in Christ. I fed you with milk, not solid food, for you were not ready for it. And even now you are not yet ready, for you are still of the flesh. For while there is jealousy and strife among you, are you not of the flesh and behaving only in a human way? For when one says, “I follow Paul,” and another, “I follow Apollos,” are you not being merely human?

What then is Apollos? What is Paul? Servants through whom you believed, as the Lord assigned to each. I planted, Apollos watered, but God gave the growth. So neither he who plants nor he who waters is anything, but only God who gives the growth. He who plants and he who waters are one, and each will receive his wages according to his labor. For we are God’s fellow workers. You are God’s field, God’s building.

10 According to the grace of God given to me, like a skilled master builder I laid a foundation, and someone else is building upon it. Let each one take care how he builds upon it. 11 For no one can lay a foundation other than that which is laid, which is Jesus Christ. 12 Now if anyone builds on the foundation with gold, silver, precious stones, wood, hay, straw— 13 each one’s work will become manifest, for the Day will disclose it, because it will be revealed by fire, and the fire will test what sort of work each one has done. 14 If the work that anyone has built on the foundation survives, he will receive a reward. 15 If anyone’s work is burned up, he will suffer loss, though he himself will be saved, but only as through fire.

16 Do you not know that you are God’s temple and that God’s Spirit dwells in you? 17 If anyone destroys God’s temple, God will destroy him. For God’s temple is holy, and you are that temple.

REFLECTION

  1. In chapters 1 and 2, Paul focused on the gospel—the true wisdom from God. In this chapter he focuses on God’s servants and reminds the Corinthians and us of our true identity in Christ.
  2. Paul told the Corinthian Christians that they were immature, worldly and quarrelsome and could not be addressed as spiritual people because they misunderstood the gospel, the church and its ministry (vv1-4).
  3. Paul used two illustrations to explain that he, Apollos, and others were only servants of Christ each serving in his own way and area under God’s direction. In cultivating a field, Paul explained that he and Apollos were fellow-workers for God, planting and nurturing. But, God is the source of all spiritual growth and accomplishment (vv5-9). In the illustration of the building (vv10-15), Paul stressed that Christ is the foundation of the church.  Paul founded the church and laid the foundation of the Corinthian church by preaching Christ and Him crucified. Other preachers added walls and continued building on that foundation.
  4. What about your church and your leaders? How would the illustrations of a field or a building under construction describe your church?
  5. Boast about your pastor, someone might come to hear him, and be impressed.
Boast about your church building, someone might come to see, and compliment you.
Boast about Jesus, and someone might realize his need, and be saved.

You are God’s temple. God’s spirit lives in you. What difference do you think this ought to make in your life-style choices? If God’s spirit lives in you, what difference will He make in the kind of person you will be? Have a prayer asking the Holy Spirit to control your life.

Proverbs for Today 17:11-14

11 An evil man seeks only rebellion,
and a cruel messenger will be sent against him.
12 Let a man meet a she-bear robbed of her cubs
rather than a fool in his folly.
13 If anyone returns evil for good,
evil will not depart from his house.
14 The beginning of strife is like letting out water,
so quit before the quarrel breaks out.

6 Yet among the mature we do impart wisdom, although it is not a wisdom of this age or of the rulers of this age, who are doomed to pass away. But we impart a secret and hidden wisdom of God, which God decreed before the ages for our glory. None of the rulers of this age understood this, for if they had, they would not have crucified the Lord of glory. But, as it is written,

“What no eye has seen, nor ear heard,
nor the heart of man imagined,
what God has prepared for those who love him”—

10 these things God has revealed to us through the Spirit. For the Spirit searches everything, even the depths of God.11 For who knows a person’s thoughts except the spirit of that person, which is in him? So also no one comprehends the thoughts of God except the Spirit of God. 12 Now we have received not the spirit of the world, but the Spirit who is from God, that we might understand the things freely given us by God. 13 And we impart this in words not taught by human wisdom but taught by the Spirit, interpreting spiritual truths to those who are spiritual.

14 The natural person does not accept the things of the Spirit of God, for they are folly to him, and he is not able to understand them because they are spiritually discerned.15 The spiritual person judges all things, but is himself to be judged by no one. 16 “For who has understood the mind of the Lord so as to instruct him?” But we have the mind of Christ.

REFLECTION

  1. In this chapter, Paul stressed that he depended on God’s spirit to preach and to testify. And God’s Spirit makes the wisdom of God’s message plain to believers.
  2. How is God’s wisdom different from the “wisdom of this age”, or of our day (vv6-10)?
  3. When it comes to understanding God’s wisdom, how does the natural person (v14, person without the Spirit) contrast with the spiritual person (vv14-16)? Do you know such people, no matter how smart they are, it’s difficult for them to understand the meaning of Christ’s salvation? They may even think your decision to follow Christ is foolish.
  4. Based on this chapter, how do you define a person of spiritual maturity? Who has been an example of spiritual maturity for you?  What can you do to become more spiritually mature?

Ask: Give a definition of maturity.  What is a mature person like? Who has been an example of spiritual maturity for you? How can you become spiritually mature?

Proverbs for Today 17:8-10

A bribe is like a magic stone in the eyes of the one who gives it;
    wherever he turns he prospers.
Whoever covers an offense seeks love,
but he who repeats a matter separates close friends.
10 A rebuke goes deeper into a man of understanding
than a hundred blows into a fool.
