Chapter3

18Dear children, let us not love with words or tongue but with actions and in truth. 19This then is how we know that we belong to the truth, and how we set our hearts at rest in his presence 20whenever our hearts condemn us. For God is greater than our hearts, and he knows everything.  21Dear friends, if our hearts do not condemn us, we have confidence before God 22and receive from him anything we ask, because we obey his commands and do what pleases him. 23And this is his command: to believe in the name of his Son, Jesus Christ, and to love one another as he commanded us. 24Those who obey his commands live in him, and he in them. And this is how we know that he lives in us: We know it by the Spirit he gave us.

Meditation

  1. Read this passage slowly and carefully.  Think: why can we cease to be controlled by the internal voice of self-criticism when we love others (v21)?
  2. What role does self-criticism play in my life?  Do I constantly criticize myself or do I find it difficult to receive compliments or affirmation?  Explore this with God, and talk with Him about what I discover.
  3. Why does John so firmly ties loving others and freedom from self-criticism?  Ponder this connection(18-20,24).
  4. Pay special attention today to my self-criticism.  Jot these things down.  Then, talk to God about it.  Recall what John says about loving others and self-criticism, and ponder it some more.  Thank God and accept the “confidence before God” (v21).

Prayer & Journaling:

我寧願有耶穌,勝得金錢,我寧屬耶穌,勝得財富無邊;

勝過做君王,雖統治萬方,卻仍受罪惡捆綁;

我寧願有耶穌,勝得稱頌,我寧忠於主,成全祂的事工;

恩主比百合花,更加美艷,遠比蜂房蜜,更加可口甘甜;

Chapter 2

15Do not love the world or anything in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him. 16For everything in the world—the cravings of sinful man, the lust of his eyes and the boasting of what he has and does—comes not from the Father but from the world. 17The world and its desires pass away, but the man who does the will of God lives forever.

Meditation

  1. The “world” in this passage refers to the value system and perceptions expressed in the culture of sinful human beings.  John pointed out the roots of every human society are in the selfish cravings of man, in the tendency to greedily desire the materialistic things he sees, and in man’s drive for self-importance.  Each of these is antagonistic to God.
  2. It is easy to become self-centered and drawn away from God by the glamour of sensuality, status, and riches that will not last.  Those who remain on pilgrimage with God will live forever.  The author reminds us that we must choose; we can have only one master.
  3. Use this hymn to express my desire for the Lord.  Look into the Lord’s eyes, sing slowly.  Pause at every sentence.  Listen to the Lord’s question: “Is this really your desire”?  Let my answer be similar to Peter’s, “Lord, you know, this is indeed my desire, though shallow, feeble, but it’s true”.

I’d rather have Jesus than silver or gold; I’d rather be His than have riches untold;

I’d rather have Jesus than houses or lands,  I’d rather be led by His nail pierced hand.

Than to be a king of a vast domain Or be held in sin’s dread sway,
I’d rather have Jesus than anything This world affords today.

I’d rather have Jesus than men’s applause; I’d rather be faithful to His dear cause;
I’d rather have Jesus than world-wide fame, I’d rather be true to His holy name.

He’s fairer than lilies of rarest bloom; He’s sweeter than honey from out of the comb;
He’s all that my hungering spirit needs, I’d rather have Jesus and let Him lead.

Chapter 1

6If we claim to have fellowship with him yet walk in the darkness, we lie and do not live by the truth. 7But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus, his Son, purifies us from all sin.

8If we claim to be without sin, we deceive ourselves and the truth is not in us. 9If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness. 10If we claim we have not sinned, we make him out to be a liar and his word has no place in our lives.

21My dear children, I write this to you so that you will not sin. But if anybody does sin, we have one who speaks to the Father in our defense—Jesus Christ, the Righteous One. 2He is the atoning sacrifice for our sins, and not only for ours but also for the sins of the whole world.

Meditation:

  1. Confession: Sharing our deepest weaknesses and failures with God and trusted others, so that we may enter into God’s grace and mercy and experience His ready forgiveness and healing. (Spiritual Formation Bible)
  2. God is light.  In order to be in fellowship with God and fellow believers, we need to enter into God’s light and to live accordingly.  Those who had left the fellowship claim they are without sin, but not the faithful.  We must admit that we do sin and need Jesus to forgive and cleanse us from sin so that we may continue walking in the light “as he himself is in the light”.
  3. Pray: Am I struggling with some sin?  What deeper bondage is still not released?  Does my guilt hold me back from Jesus?  Talk to him about this.  Now sit silently, listen for Jesus’ response.  What is his desire for me?

Prayer & Journaling:

Stay with God for a little longer.  Continue to converse with God and listen to what he wants to tell me.  Then write down any thought and/or prayer in the 2012 “Spiritual Journal” book.

Chapter 21

15When they had finished eating, Jesus said to Simon Peter, “Simon son of John, do you truly love me more than these?”  “Yes, Lord,” he said, “you know that I love you.”  Jesus said, “Feed my lambs.”  16Again Jesus said, “Simon son of John, do you truly love me?” He answered, “Yes, Lord, you know that I love you.” Jesus said, “Take care of my sheep.” 17 The third time he said to him, “Simon son of John, do you love me?” Peter was hurt because Jesus asked him the third time, “Do you love me?” He said, “Lord, you know all things; you know that I love you.” Jesus said, “Feed my sheep. 18 I tell you the truth, when you were younger you dressed yourself and went where you wanted; but when you are old you will stretch out your hands, and someone else will dress you and lead you where you do not want to go.” 19Jesus said this to indicate the kind of death by which Peter would glorify God. Then he said to him, “Follow me!”

Meditation

  1. Read it slowly as if I were Peter and the Lord was asking me three times, “Do you love me?”  Follow Peter’s answers and imagine his mood, emotion and thoughts going through his whole person.  Repeat it several times paying extra attention to what the Lord is saying to Peter.  Is He speaking to me, too?
  2. Continue to be quiet before the Lord, listen, wait, listen, and wait…..
  3. If I have heard what the Lord is telling me, thank Him.  If I haven’t, thank Him, too.  Continue to wait and listen to the whispering voice of the Holy Spirit after this time with God.

Prayer & Journaling:

Stay with God for a little longer.  Continue to converse with God and listen to what he wants to tell me.  Then write down any thought and/or prayer in the 2012 “Spiritual Journal” book.

Chapter 20

19On the evening of that first day of the week, when the disciples were together, with the doors locked for fear of the Jews, Jesus came and stood among them and said, “Peace be with you!” 20After he said this, he showed them his hands and side. The disciples were overjoyed when they saw the Lord.  21Again Jesus said, “Peace be with you! As the Father has sent me, I am sending you.” 22And with that he breathed on them and said, “Receive the Holy Spirit. 23If you forgive anyone his sins, they are forgiven; if you do not forgive them, they are not forgiven.”   24Now Thomas (called Didymus), one of the Twelve, was not with the disciples when Jesus came. 25So the other disciples told him, “We have seen the Lord!” But he said to them, “Unless I see the nail marks in his hands and put my finger where the nails were, and put my hand into his side, I will not believe it.”  26A week later his disciples were in the house again, and Thomas was with them. Though the doors were locked, Jesus came and stood among them and said, “Peace be with you!” 27Then he said to Thomas, “Put your finger here; see my hands. Reach out your hand and put it into my side. Stop doubting and believe.”  28Thomas said to him, “My Lord and my God!”  29Then Jesus told him, “Because you have seen me, you have believed; blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed.”

Meditation:

  1. Read John’s description of the first time Jesus appeared to his disciples after his death and resurrection.  Pay special attention to Jesus’ words to them.
  2. What does Thomas’s response to Jesus’ resurrection make me feel?  How did Jesus respond to him?
  3. Read the passage once more.  Look around Jesus’ disciples, those believing ones; and then Thomas.  Judging from where I actually am in my relationship with Jesus right now, where will I be?  As I hear Jesus speak to me, respond to him from my heart.  Let him engage me in conversation.
  4. Thank God for the faith he has given me no matter if I were a Thomas or like the other disciple.

Prayer & Journaling:

Stay with God for a little longer.  Continue to converse with God and listen to what he wants to tell me.  Then write down any thought and/or prayer in the 2012 “Spiritual Journal” book.

Chapter 19

1Then Pilate took Jesus and had him flogged. 2The soldiers twisted together a crown of thorns and put it on his head. They clothed him in a purple robe 3and went up to him again and again, saying, “Hail, king of the Jews!” And they struck him in the face.  4Once more Pilate came out and said to the Jews, “Look, I am bringing him out to you to let you know that I find no basis for a charge against him.” 5When Jesus came out wearing the crown of thorns and the purple robe, Pilate said to them, “Here is the man!”  6As soon as the chief priests and their officials saw him, they shouted, “Crucify! Crucify!”       But Pilate answered, “You take him and crucify him. As for me, I find no basis for a charge against him.”  7The Jews insisted, “We have a law, and according to that law he must die, because he claimed to be the Son of God.”  8When Pilate heard this, he was even more afraid, 9and he went back inside the palace. “Where do you come from?” he asked Jesus, but Jesus gave him no answer. 10“Do you refuse to speak to me?” Pilate said. “Don’t you realize I have power either to free you or to crucify you?”  11Jesus answered, “You would have no power over me if it were not given to you from above. Therefore the one who handed me over to you is guilty of a greater sin.”  12From then on, Pilate tried to set Jesus free, but the Jews kept shouting, “If you let this man go, you are no friend of Caesar. Anyone who claims to be a king opposes Caesar.”  13When Pilate heard this, he brought Jesus out and sat down on the judge’s seat at a place known as the Stone Pavement (which in Aramaic is Gabbatha). 14It was the day of Preparation of Passover Week, about the sixth hour.       “Here is your king,” Pilate said to the Jews.

15But they shouted, “Take him away! Take him away! Crucify him!”       “Shall I crucify your king?” Pilate asked.       “We have no king but Caesar,” the chief priests answered.  16Finally Pilate handed him over to them to be crucified.

Meditation:

  1. Read this passage slowly.  If it’s possible, read the whole chapter.  Try to see and hear the story.  What do I think and how do I feel?  Talk to God about it.  Wait for His response.
  2. Sing or read this hymn as a response prayer.

Chapter 18

4Jesus, knowing all that was going to happen to him, went out and asked them, “Who is it you want?”  5“Jesus of Nazareth,” they replied.    “I am he,” Jesus said. (And Judas the traitor was standing there with them.) 6When Jesus said, “I am he,” they drew back and fell to the ground.  7Again he asked them, “Who is it you want?”       And they said, “Jesus of Nazareth.”  8“I told you that I am he,” Jesus answered. “If you are looking for me, then let these men go.” 9This happened so that the words he had spoken would be fulfilled: “I have not lost one of those you gave me.” 10Then Simon Peter, who had a sword, drew it and struck the high priest’s servant, cutting off his right ear. (The servant’s name was Malchus.)  11Jesus commanded Peter, “Put your sword away! Shall I not drink the cup the Father has given me?”

25As Simon Peter stood warming himself, he was asked, “You are not one of his disciples, are you?” He denied it, saying, “I am not.” 26One of the high priest’s servants, a relative of the man whose ear Peter had cut off, challenged him, “Didn’t I see you with him in the olive grove?” 27Again Peter denied it, and at that moment a rooster began to crow.

Meditation:

  1. Go over the passage slowly with humility.  Wait for God to speak to me about Peter’s actions here.
  2. Read this passage again.  How does the story of Peter both self-confident(v10) and weak (vv25-27) encourage me?  When have I felt like Peter?
  3. Talk to God about this.  Allow the Holy Spirit to work to heal and to mold in me slowly and surely.

Prayer & Journaling:

Stay with God for a little longer.  Continue to converse with God and listen to what he wants to tell me.  Then write down any thought and/or prayer in the 2012 “Spiritual Journal” book.

Chapter 17

20“My prayer is not for them alone. I pray also for those who will believe in me through their message, 21that all of them may be one, Father, just as you are in me and I am in you. May they also be in us so that the world may believe that you have sent me. 22I have given them the glory that you gave me, that they may be one as we are one: 23I in them and you in me. May they be brought to complete unity to let the world know that you sent me and have loved them even as you have loved me. 24“Father, I want those you have given me to be with me where I am, and to see my glory, the glory you have given me because you loved me before the creation of the world. 25“Righteous Father, though the world does not know you, I know you, and they know that you have sent me. 26I have made you known to them, and will continue to make you known in order that the love you have for me may be in them and that I myself may be in them.”

Meditation:

  1.  Read the passage slowly, knowing that this is Jesus praying for me (“those who will believe in me”). Read it again; substitute my name when it comes to them or they.  If needed, read it one more time.
  2. What am I most excited about Jesus praying for me or saying about me?  Why?
  3. Thank Jesus for praying for me.  Talk to him about the prayer phrases I found most meaningful.  Pray Jesus’ prayer for his followers alive today in the world.
  4. Walk around today with the sense that Jesus is in me and that this was always his plan – to be in me.

Prayer & Journaling:

Stay with God for a little longer.  Continue to converse with God and listen to what he wants to tell me.  Then write down any thought and/or prayer in the 2012 “Spiritual Journal” book.

Chapter 16

7But I tell you the truth: It is for your good that I am going away. Unless I go away, the Counselor will not come to you; but if I go, I will send him to you. 8When he comes, he will convict the world of guilt[a] in regard to sin and righteousness and judgment: 9in regard to sin, because men do not believe in me; 10in regard to righteousness, because I am going to the Father, where you can see me no longer; 11and in regard to judgment, because the prince of this world now stands condemned.  12“I have much more to say to you, more than you can now bear. 13But when he, the Spirit of truth, comes, he will guide you into all truth. He will not speak on his own; he will speak only what he hears, and he will tell you what is yet to come. 14He will bring glory to me by taking from what is mine and making it known to you. 15All that belongs to the Father is mine. That is why I said the Spirit will take from what is mine and make it known to you.

Meditation

  1. The Holy Spirit has three ministries to the world.  In regard to sin: the essence of sin is unbelief (v9).  Our trust in Jesus contrasts the world’s rejection of Him, this confirms its guilt.  In regard to righteousness: the ultimate standard of righteousness is God Himself, expressed in Jesus, whose claims have been vindicated by His return to the Father’s side(v 10).  Though men see Jesus no longer, His character is displayed in believers’ Christlike lives.  We continually exhibit the gap that exists between sinners and the Lord.  In regard to judgment: The Cross and Resurrection – the reality of which are seen in the believer who lives his life in Jesus’ resurrection power (Rm 8:11), proves unequivocally that Satan is a defeated foe.  Thus the world system he dominates is an empty sham.
  2. There is nothing we can do to convict the world we live in.  It is our lives, infused by the Spirit’s power and displaying heaven’s grace, that boldly proclaim the judgment of our God.
  3. Thank the Holy Spirit for His guidance in helping me to live out the Christlike life daily.

Prayer & Journaling:

Stay with God for a little longer.  Continue to converse with God and listen to what he wants to tell me.  Then write down any thought and/or prayer in the 2012 “Spiritual Journal” book.

Chapter 15

1“I am the true vine, and my Father is the gardener. 2He cuts off every branch in me that bears no fruit, while every branch that does bear fruit he prunes so that it will be even more fruitful. 3You are already clean because of the word I have spoken to you. 4Remain in me, and I will remain in you. No branch can bear fruit by itself; it must remain in the vine. Neither can you bear fruit unless you remain in me.  5“I am the vine; you are the branches. If a man remains in me and I in him, he will bear much fruit; apart from me you can do nothing. 6If anyone does not remain in me, he is like a branch that is thrown away and withers; such branches are picked up, thrown into the fire and burned. 7If you remain in me and my words remain in you, ask whatever you wish, and it will be given you. 8This is to my Father’s glory, that you bear much fruit, showing yourselves to be my disciples.  9“As the Father has loved me, so have I loved you. Now remain in my love.

Meditation

  1. Jesus’ disciples are branches, He is the Vine.  As we remain in His love, we produce fruit.  A branch draws its nutrients from the vine.  In the same way we draw the spiritual vitality from Jesus in order for us to produce fruit.  Thus Jesus says clearly, “Apart from me you can do nothing.”
  2. For the branches to bear more fruits, the gardener needs to prune his vine regularly.  The great Gardener, our heavenly Father, works with extreme care to prune His vines.  We’re assured that God, the gardener, actively tending His vineyard, is fully committed to bring us to maximum fruitfulness.  God’s pruning work benefits us, it doesn’t threaten us.
  3. Remain in the Lord and thank Him for the necessary pruning in order for me to be fruitful.

Chapter 14

15“If you love me, you will obey what I command. 16And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Counselor to be with you forever— 17the Spirit of truth. The world cannot accept him, because it neither sees him nor knows him. But you know him, for he lives with you and will be in you.

Meditation:

  1. This passage is about the Holy Spirit, ask Him to guide in a prayerful reading of it.  Make the reading a prayer in itself.
  2. The Holy Spirit is the most neglected personhood of God.  Yet Jesus promises to leave His disciples (and us as his followers) with this important Friend.  What does it mean to have the Holy Spirit in me and guiding me throughout my day, as this passage says: “But you know him, for he lives with you and will be in you”?  Is it comforting? Discomforting? Frustrating?  Hard to understand?  Awesome?  How can I grow today in awareness that the Friend lives in me?
  3. As I drive, walk, work, study, and interact with others today, call on my Friend for his guidance with the thoughts I think, the words I speak, and the decisions I make.

Prayer & Journaling:

Stay with God for a little longer.  Continue to converse with God and listen to what he wants to tell me.  Then write down any thought and/or prayer in the 2012 “Spiritual Journal” book.

Chapter 13

1It was just before the Passover Feast. Jesus knew that the time had come for him to leave this world and go to the Father. Having loved his own who were in the world, he now showed them the full extent of his love. 2The evening meal was being served, and the devil had already prompted Judas Iscariot, son of Simon, to betray Jesus. 3Jesus knew that the Father had put all things under his power, and that he had come from God and was returning to God; 4so he got up from the meal, took off his outer clothing, and wrapped a towel around his waist. 5After that, he poured water into a basin and began to wash his disciples’ feet, drying them with the towel that was wrapped around him.

12When he had finished washing their feet, he put on his clothes and returned to his place. “Do you understand what I have done for you?” he asked them. 13“You call me ‘Teacher’ and ‘Lord,’ and rightly so, for that is what I am. 14Now that I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also should wash one another’s feet. 15I have set you an example that you should do as I have done for you. 16I tell you the truth, no servant is greater than his master, nor is a messenger greater than the one who sent him. 17Now that you know these things, you will be blessed if you do them.

Meditation

  1. Jesus’ Last Supper begins with profound lessons in humility and baptism.  Notice the incredible extent of Jesus’ love, the ignorance of human responses, and the immensity of Christ’s servanthood.
  2. Think over the definition of Service – Loving, thoughtful, active promotion of the good of others and the causes of God in our world, through which we experience the many little deaths of going beyond ourselves. (Spiritual Formation Bible)
  3. Reflect:  Is humility the trademark for my service?  Talk to God and wait for His response.

Chapter 12

20Now there were some Greeks among those who went up to worship at the Feast. 21They came to Philip, who was from Bethsaida in Galilee, with a request. “Sir,” they said, “we would like to see Jesus.” 22Philip went to tell Andrew; Andrew and Philip in turn told Jesus.  23Jesus replied, “The hour has come for the Son of Man to be glorified. 24I tell you the truth, unless a kernel of wheat falls to the ground and dies, it remains only a single seed. But if it dies, it produces many seeds. 25The man who loves his life will lose it, while the man who hates his life in this world will keep it for eternal life. 26Whoever serves me must follow me; and where I am, my servant also will be. My Father will honor the one who serves me.

Meditation:

  1. What does Jesus mean when he talks about a grain of wheat dying and reproducing itself?  Then wait for Jesus to show an area of my life – a relationship, a decision to be made, and so on – in which I am holding on to the status quo, and not allowing him to bring growth or change.  In what way might this be destructive or suffocating?
  2. Ponder Romans 12:2 “Fix your attention on God. You’ll be changed from the inside out.”(the Message).  What would this area of my life look like if I am to “fix my attention on God, ” and in so doing, let go?
  3. Hold hands in tight fists.  Then relax them, open them, and turn palms upward.  Talk with Jesus about what a life of open hands would look like.  Ask him to show me what it means to be where he is(26).
  4. Think again about the tightly held part of my life.  Talk with Jesus, ask Him to help me to let go just a little bit today, and tomorrow, …

他當天親身的應許,他必會與我伴結前行;
一生中的每段道路,都必會帶領我經過;
路漸盡回望我的一生,雖有他一起的腳蹤;
每次我心中多悲傷,他怎卻遠去剩我獨行;
每次我感到是寂寞,他怎卻遠去剩我孤單;
默默地在我身邊的主,跟我低聲輕輕說出;
回望我過去多少的失意,但你每次每次也在旁;
明白到有你居於心深處,我不再是獨行;

Chapter 11

28And after she had said this, she went back and called her sister Mary aside. “The Teacher is here,” she said, “and is asking for you.” 29When Mary heard this, she got up quickly and went to him. 30Now Jesus had not yet entered the village, but was still at the place where Martha had met him. 31When the Jews who had been with Mary in the house, comforting her, noticed how quickly she got up and went out, they followed her, supposing she was going to the tomb to mourn there.  32When Mary reached the place where Jesus was and saw him, she fell at his feet and said, “Lord, if you had been here, my brother would not have died.”  33When Jesus saw her weeping, and the Jews who had come along with her also weeping, he was deeply moved in spirit and troubled. 34“Where have you laid him?” he asked.  “Come and see, Lord,” they replied.  35Jesus wept.  36Then the Jews said, “See how he loved him!”

Meditation:

  1. What stands out and draws my attention in this passage? The deep love of the two sisters for their brother?  Their grief?  Jesus’ weeping?
  2. Mary said to Jesus: “Lord, if you had been here…”. Have I also had similar thought?  What was my complaint or accusation of the Lord?
  3. Have I felt lonely and burdened lately?  Try to visualize the image when God carried me through.  Thank God for this.  Read the words as my prayer: Footprints in the Sand – The Poem

One night a man had a dream. He dreamed he was walking along the beach with the LORD. Across the sky flashed scenes from his life. For each scene he noticed two sets of footprints in the sand: one belonging to him, and the other to the LORD.
When the last scene of his life flashed before him, he looked back at the footprints in the sand. He noticed that many times along the path of his life there was only one set of footprints. He also noticed that it happened at the very lowest and saddest times in his life. This really bothered him and he questioned the LORD about it:
“LORD, you said that once I decided to follow you, you’d walk with me all the way.
But I have noticed that during the most troublesome times in my life, there is only one set of footprints. I don’t understand why when I needed you most you would leave me.”
The LORD replied: “My son, my precious child, I love you and I would never leave you. During your times of trial and suffering, when you see only one set of footprints, it was then that I carried you.”

Chapter 10

1“I tell you the truth, the man who does not enter the sheep pen by the gate, but climbs in by some other way, is a thief and a robber. 2The man who enters by the gate is the shepherd of his sheep. 3The watchman opens the gate for him, and the sheep listen to his voice. He calls his own sheep by name and leads them out. 4When he has brought out all his own, he goes on ahead of them, and his sheep follow him because they know his voice. 5But they will never follow a stranger; in fact, they will run away from him because they do not recognize a stranger’s voice.”

14“I am the good shepherd; I know my sheep and my sheep know me— 15just as the Father knows me and I know the Father—and I lay down my life for the sheep. 16I have other sheep that are not of this sheep pen. I must bring them also. They too will listen to my voice, and there shall be one flock and one shepherd. 17The reason my Father loves me is that I lay down my life—only to take it up again. 18No one takes it from me, but I lay it down of my own accord. I have authority to lay it down and authority to take it up again. This command I received from my Father.”

Meditation

  1. Read these words of Jesus aloud slowly as if he were explaining this to me personally.  Notice that the repeated word “know”.  Jesus knows his sheep; they know Jesus.  The Father knows Jesus; Jesus knows the Father.
  2. Jesus, the Good Shepherd, does the following for the sheep.  Which of these do I most need for Jesus to do for me today?

◊ call his own sheep by name
    ◊ lead them out
    ◊ know his own sheep
◊ put the sheep before himself, sacrificing himself, if necessary
◊ gather and bring other sheep

  3. The sheep recognize Jesus’ voice and respond by following him and knowing him.  How do I need to respond to Jesus today?
  4. Pray: Talk to Jesus about what I need.  Especially talk about my capacity to recognize his voice.  Ask for his help.

Chapter 9

13They brought to the Pharisees the man who had been blind. 14Now the day on which Jesus had made the mud and opened the man’s eyes was a Sabbath. 15Therefore the Pharisees also asked him how he had received his sight. “He put mud on my eyes,” the man replied, “and I washed, and now I see.”  16Some of the Pharisees said, “This man is not from God, for he does not keep the Sabbath.”
But others asked, “How can a sinner do such miraculous signs?” So they were divided.  17Finally they turned again to the blind man, “What have you to say about him? It was your eyes he opened.”
The man replied, “He is a prophet.”  18The Jews still did not believe that he had been blind and had received his sight until they sent for the man’s parents. 19“Is this your son?” they asked. “Is this the one you say was born blind? How is it that now he can see?”  20“We know he is our son,” the parents answered, “and we know he was born blind. 21But how he can see now, or who opened his eyes, we don’t know. Ask him. He is of age; he will speak for himself.” 22His parents said this because they were afraid of the Jews, for already the Jews had decided that anyone who acknowledged that Jesus was the Christ would be put out of the synagogue. 23That was why his parents said, “He is of age; ask him.”  24A second time they summoned the man who had been blind. “Give glory to God,” they said. “We know this man is a sinner.”  25He replied, “Whether he is a sinner or not, I don’t know. One thing I do know. I was blind but now I see!”

Meditation

  1. The Pharisees could say whatever they wanted about Jesus.  But they had to face the fact that He gave sight to a man born blind.  Today, people can pass any judgment on Jesus.  But if they are honest they have to agree that millions testify to Jesus’ transforming work in their lives.  John Newton, once a slave trader, experienced a transformation expressed and wrote this hymn:

“Amazing Grace, how sweet the sound, that saved a wretch like me.
I once was lost but now am found, was blind, but now, I see.
T’was Grace that taught my heart to fear.  And Grace, my fears relieved.
How precious did that Grace appear, the hour I first believed.

  2. Sing softly this hymn and reflect on my life before and after encountering God’s grace.  Use this hymn as my thanksgiving to God for His wonderful transforming “work in progress” in me.

CHAPTER 8

1But Jesus went to the Mount of Olives. 2At dawn he appeared again in the temple courts, where all the people gathered around him, and he sat down to teach them. 3The teachers of the law and the Pharisees brought in a woman caught in adultery. They made her stand before the group 4and said to Jesus, “Teacher, this woman was caught in the act of adultery. 5In the Law Moses commanded us to stone such women. Now what do you say?” 6They were using this question as a trap, in order to have a basis for accusing him.    But Jesus bent down and started to write on the ground with his finger. 7When they kept on questioning him, he straightened up and said to them, “If any one of you is without sin, let him be the first to throw a stone at her.” 8Again he stooped down and wrote on the ground.  9At this, those who heard began to go away one at a time, the older ones first, until only Jesus was left, with the woman still standing there. 10Jesus straightened up and asked her, “Woman, where are they? Has no one condemned you?”  11“No one, sir,” she said.  “Then neither do I condemn you,” Jesus declared. “Go now and leave your life of sin.”

Meditation:

  1. Imagine myself in the crowd that day.  Picture the embarrassed and ashamed expression on the woman’s face.  Hear the condescending voices of the religious leaders.  Feel the dirt blowing against me as Jesus bends down and writes something in it.
  2. Come honestly before God and ask the Spirit to reveal to me the sins I’ve engaged in recently.  Then imagine myself in the same situation as this woman.  I’m caught in this sin, exposed.  Imagine me and Jesus having the same conversation: “Does no one condemn you?”  “No one, Master.”  He looks me in the eye.  “Neither do I.  Go on your way.  From now on don’t sin.”  What am I feeling?  Thinking?

John 7

Chapter 7

45Finally the temple guards went back to the chief priests and Pharisees, who asked them, “Why didn’t you bring him in?”  46“No one ever spoke the way this man does,” the guards declared.  47“You mean he has deceived you also?” the Pharisees retorted. 48“Has any of the rulers or of the Pharisees believed in him? 49No! ut this mob that knows nothing of the law—there is a curse on them.”  50Nicodemus, who had gone to Jesus earlier and who was one of their own number, asked, 51“Does our law condemn anyone without first hearing him to find out what he is doing?”  52They replied, “Are you from Galilee, too? Look into it, and you will find that a prophet does not come out of Galilee.”

Meditation:

  1. The temple guards impressed with Jesus’ teaching didn’t arrest Jesus.  Nicodemus, the Pharisee that visited Jesus at night (ch 3) had apparently became a believer, despite the overwhelming hatred of Jesus from his fellowmen.  He risked his reputation and defended for Jesus.  He attacked them for breaking their own rules and exposed their hypocritical motive.
  2. How do I respond when I hear people around me (relatives or strangers) criticizing or blaspheming Jesus?
  3. Sit quietly before the Lord.  Try to imagine what Jesus encountered, vicious attack and murder threat.  What feelings are stirred up in me?  Talk to Jesus and listen to His response.

Prayer & Journaling:

Stay with God for a little longer.  Continue to converse with God and listen to what he wants to tell me.  Then write down any thought and/or prayer in the 2012 “Spiritual Journal” book.

John 6

Chapter 6

35Then Jesus declared, “I am the bread of life. He who comes to me will never go hungry, and he who believes in me will never be thirsty. 36But as I told you, you have seen me and still you do not believe. 37All that the Father gives me will come to me, and whoever comes to me I will never drive away. 38For I have come down from heaven not to do my will but to do the will of him who sent me. 39And this is the will of him who sent me, that I shall lose none of all that he has given me, but raise them up at the last day. 40For my Father’s will is that everyone who looks to the Son and believes in him shall have eternal life, and I will raise him up at the last day.”  41At this the Jews began to grumble about him because he said, “I am the bread that came down from heaven.” 42They said, “Is this not Jesus, the son of Joseph, whose father and mother we know? How can he now say, ‘I came down from heaven’?”  43“Stop grumbling among yourselves,” Jesus answered. 44“No one can come to me unless the Father who sent me draws him, and I will raise him up at the last day. 45It is written in the Prophets: ‘They will all be taught by God.’ Everyone who listens to the Father and learns from him comes to me. 46No one has seen the Father except the one who is from God; only he has seen the Father. 47I tell you the truth, he who believes has everlasting life. 48I am the bread of life. 49Your forefathers ate the manna in the desert, yet they died. 50But here is the bread that comes down from heaven, which a man may eat and not die. 51I am the living bread that came down from heaven. If anyone eats of this bread, he will live forever. This bread is my flesh, which I will give for the life of the world.”  52Then the Jews began to argue sharply among themselves, “How can this man give us his flesh to eat?”

Meditation:

  1. Some folks “hope” they have eternal life.  Others “trust they will have” eternal life.  And other folks insist “How can you know until you’re dead?”  Others will say, “What makes you think you’re so much better than me?”  Pause for a moment and ask myself: what is my understanding or belief about eternal life?
  2. Jesus wants us to know that we have eternal life (v37).  After we responded to God, He will keep us safe, forever.  Again, in vv 39-40, it’s not “will have” eternal life, not “may have”, and not “maybe has”.  It’s “he who believes has everlasting life.”(v47)
  3. Since Jesus says I have eternal life and I can take His word for it. Take the time to thank God for His salvation and eternal life for me.

Prayer & Journaling:
Stay with God for a little longer.  Continue to converse with God and listen to what he wants to tell me.  Then write down any thought and/or prayer in the 2012 “Spiritual Journal” book.

John 5

Chapter 5

1Some time later, Jesus went up to Jerusalem for a feast of the Jews. 2Now there is in Jerusalem near the Sheep Gate a pool, which in Aramaic is called Bethesdaand which is surrounded by five covered colonnades. 3Here a great number of disabled people used to lie—the blind, the lame, the paralyzed. 5One who was there had been an invalid for thirty-eight years. 6When Jesus saw him lying there and learned that he had been in this condition for a long time, he asked him, “Do you want to get well?”  7“Sir,” the invalid replied, “I have no one to help me into the pool when the water is stirred. While I am trying to get in, someone else goes down ahead of me.”  8Then Jesus said to him, “Get up! Pick up your mat and walk.” 9At once the man was cured; he picked up his mat and walked.       The day on which this took place was a Sabbath,

 Meditation:

  1. What stands out and draws my attention in this passage?  Do I deeply desire to experience wholeness of mind or spirit because of my wounded-ness lately?  Or do I find myself questioning whether Jesus really can heal a physical sickness – either my own or someone else’s?
  2. Ask Jesus what he has specifically for me that calls for healing.  Talk to God about what I hear.  (Allowing Jesus to bring healing might require letting go of something that may hurt a lot to release, and may not think I’m ready for it right now.  Or I desire freedom and wholeness, but feel stuck, imprisoned, fragmented.  Or in this moment I find myself ready for my healing.)
  3. If the time with Jesus and God’s message today moved me the tiniest bit closer to wholeness, rejoice.  If not, simply let things be.  Continue talking to Jesus about my situation, being alert to what he has for me.

Prayer & Journaling:

Stay with God for a little longer.  Continue to converse with God and listen to what he wants to tell me.  Then write down any thought and/or prayer in the 2012 “Spiritual Journal” book.

John 4

Chapter 4

43After the two days he left for Galilee. 44(Now Jesus himself had pointed out that a prophet has no honor in his own country.) 45When he arrived in Galilee, the Galileans welcomed him. They had seen all that he had done in Jerusalem at the Passover Feast, for they also had been there.  46Once more he visited Cana in Galilee, where he had turned the water into wine. And there was a certain royal official whose son lay sick at Capernaum. 47When this man heard that Jesus had arrived in Galilee from Judea, he went to him and begged him to come and heal his son, who was close to death.  48“Unless you people see miraculous signs and wonders,” Jesus told him, “you will never believe.”  49The royal official said, “Sir, come down before my child dies.”  50Jesus replied, “You may go. Your son will live.”       The man took Jesus at his word and departed. 51While he was still on the way, his servants met him with the news that his boy was living. 52When he inquired as to the time when his son got better, they said to him, “The fever left him yesterday at the seventh hour.”  53Then the father realized that this was the exact time at which Jesus had said to him, “Your son will live.” So he and all his household believed.  54This was the second miraculous sign that Jesus performed, having come from Judea to Galilee.

Meditation

  1. When the anxious father came, Jesus seemed quite indifferent and said to the father: “Unless you people see miraculous signs and wonders you will never believe.”   And when the father asked Jesus again, Jesus replied, “You may go. Your son will live.”
  2. This is the dilemma of faith.  God, in response to our desperate appeals, speaks to us and says, “It’s done.  Go home and you’ll find the sick healed.”  Faith is very much the same.  We come to God desperate for salvation.  And all He said is, “you may go.”  The work is done, your healing accomplished.  And, though we lack evidence, in faith, we walk away as Jesus said.
  3. Reflect: When I bring my problem to God, do I tend to accept his word or keep fretting and fussing?   Do I actually live out my life in a way that demonstrates that I really believe God is in control and wants the best for me?   Talk to God about this and listen to His response.

John 3

Chapter 3:16-21

16“For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. 17For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him. 18Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe stands condemned already because he has not believed in the name of God’s one and only Son. 19This is the verdict: Light has come into the world, but men loved darkness instead of light because their deeds were evil. 20Everyone who does evil hates the light, and will not come into the light for fear that his deeds will be exposed. 21But whoever lives by the truth comes into the light, so that it may be seen plainly that what he has done has been done through God.”

Meditation:

  1. Nicodemus who was a Pharisee, one night he decided to speak to Jesus and question him. It was through this line of questioning that Nicodemus truly began to understand the teachings of Jesus and was helped “out of the dark” and into a new life of “light.”  Kathleen Norris wrote “I came to understand that God hadn’t lost me, even if I seemed for years to have misplaced God.”  How do I view the time I have spent wandering in darkness, maybe struggling against new birth?
  2. Read through the passage. Are there any words or phrases that stand out to me? Why? What do I think God is trying to tell me?
  3. Talk to God about both the phrases that confused me and those that really captivated me.

John 2

CHAPTER 2

3When the wine was gone, Jesus’ mother said to him, “They have no more wine.”  4“Dear woman, why do you involve me?” Jesus replied, “My time has not yet come.”  5His mother said to the servants, “Do whatever he tells you.”

11This, the first of his miraculous signs, Jesus performed in Cana of Galilee. He thus revealed his glory, and his disciples put their faith in him.

23Now while he was in Jerusalem at the Passover Feast, many people saw the miraculous signs he was doing and believed in his name. 24But Jesus would not entrust himself to them, for he knew all men. 25He did not need man’s testimony about man, for he knew what was in a man.

Meditation:

  1. This is Jesus’ first sign that is further proof of the actions of Jesus continuing the act of God. This sign along with many others (i.e. seven days of creation) help us to realize that God is still at work in this land that he has created. And whether or not we see it, he is still working today revealing his goodness and glory in everything he does.
  2. When I truly understand that all signs point me to God’s glory, power and existence, will I still resist God’s healing and provision? What signs have I witnessed in my journey with God?

DEVOTION

Gospel of John

CHAPTER 1 (NIV)

12Yet to all who received him, to those who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God— 13children born not of natural descent, nor of human decision or a husband’s will, but born of God.  14The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. We have seen his glory, the glory of the One and Only, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth.  15John testifies concerning him. He cries out, saying, “This was he of whom I said, ‘He who comes after me has surpassed me because he was before me.’ ” 16From the fullness of his grace we have all received one blessing after another. 17For the law was given through Moses; grace and truth came through Jesus Christ. 18No one has ever seen God, but God the One and Only, who is at the Father’s side, has made him known.

Meditation:

  1. Read over this passage a few times taking the time to let it sink in. What strikes me the most in the passage?
  2. When it says the “Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us” (v14) , how does that make me feel? What would my life be like if God moved to my street or shared the workspace with me?  How would the environment of my neighbourhood be different if God had moved in? How might my life be different?
  3. Meditate on these words “In him was life, and that life was the light of men. The light shines in the darkness, but the darkness has not understood it.” (John1:4-5)

Prayer & Journaling:

Stay with God for a little longer.  Continue to converse with God and listen to what he wants to tell me.  Then write down any thought and/or prayer in the 2012 “Spiritual Journal” book.

Jude

Jude 3-8

3Dear friends, although I was very eager to write to you about the salvation we share, I felt I had to write and urge you to contend for the faith that was once for all entrusted to the saints. 4For certain men whose condemnation was written aboutlong ago have secretly slipped in among you. They are godless men, who change the grace of our God into a license for immorality and deny Jesus Christ our only Sovereign and Lord.  5Though you already know all this, I want to remind you that the Lorddelivered his people out of Egypt, but later destroyed those who did not believe. 6And the angels who did not keep their positions of authority but abandoned their own home—these he has kept in darkness, bound with everlasting chains for judgment on the great Day. 7In a similar way, Sodom and Gomorrah and the surrounding towns gave themselves up to sexual immorality and perversion. They serve as an example of those who suffer the punishment of eternal fire.  8In the very same way, these dreamers pollute their own bodies, reject authority and slander celestial beings.

Meditation:

  1. “Grace”(v4) means when I have sinned, if I confess, God will forgive and will still receive me as His child.  But what if I reason that I can do whatever I feel like and turn my back on what is right, after all, I have God’s grace to forgive, to accept and to bless, and to indulge more in this kind of lifestyle.  This is the false teaching Jude is warning against that has infiltrated Christ’s church.
  2. Sit in silence and think back on previous experiences when I’ve done whatever I felt like, turning my back on what was right.  Now consider experiences I’ve had with grace.  Ask God to show me one of these experiences to focus on.  Recall the details.  What was it like for me?  What was going on around me?  What was I feeling?
  3. Walk through today pondering the grace of this experience.

Prayer & Journaling:

Stay with God for a little longer.  Continue to converse with God and listen to what he wants to tell me.  Then write down any thought and/or prayer in the 2012 “Spiritual Journal” book.

Chapter 3

8But do not forget this one thing, dear friends: With the Lord a day is like a thousand years, and a thousand years are like a day. 9The Lord is not slow in keeping his promise, as some understand slowness. He is patient with you, not wanting anyone to perish, but everyone to come to repentance.

10But the day of the Lord will come like a thief. The heavens will disappear with a roar; the elements will melt in the heat.  11 Since everything will be destroyed in this way, what kind of people ought you to be? You ought to live holy and godly lives 12 as you look forward to the day of God and speed its coming. That day will bring about the destruction of the heavens by fire, and the elements will melt in the heat. 13 But in keeping with his promise we are looking forward to a new heaven and a new earth, the home of righteousness.

Meditation

  1. Many in Peter’s audience were concerned and dismayed that Christ’s second coming had not yet occurred.  Peter reminded his readers that a very long time for us is a very short time for God.  Peter comments that God’s patience is responsible for the long wait for His coming.  God has no desire for anyone to “perish” (v9).
  2. Someone has commented that transformation into the image of Christ “is the slowest of all human movements.”  Too easily we become impatient with ourselves, confused, disappointed, and angered over how long it takes to change.  Will I ever conquer this habit?  Will I ever learn to love?  Will I ever be willing to leave my comfort zone?  Will I always be so fearful?  Or selfish?  Or self-deceived?  Peter’s words remind us that God is in no rush.  He knows what we are made of.  The spiritual life is more a marathon than a sprint, and God is more than willing to run alongside of us or to walk with us if we grow weary.
  3. Reflect.  What is the area of my spiritual growth that is the slowest to change?  Thank God for His patience for me.  Ask God to help me cooperate with Him to finish the enormous life transformation project going on in my life.

CHAPTER 2

1But there were also false prophets among the people, just as there will be false teachers among you. They will secretly introduce destructive heresies, even denying the sovereign Lord who bought them—bringing swift destruction on themselves. 2Many will follow their shameful ways and will bring the way of truth into disrepute. 3In their greed these teachers will exploit you with stories they have made up. Their condemnation has long been hanging over them, and their destruction has not been sleeping.

18For they mouth empty, boastful words and, by appealing to the lustful desires of sinful human nature, they entice people who are just escaping from those who live in error. 19They promise them freedom, while they themselves are slaves of depravity—for a man is a slave to whatever has mastered him.

Jude 3-8

Meditation

  1. Peter insists genuine freedom is found in willingly submitting to God in all things.  The false teachers declare, “We are free because we do whatever we please.  We are free from all boundaries, restrictions, restraints.”  Exactly the opposite is true.  We have been created for freedom, but we discover our freedom only by submitting to God and obeying Him.  False teachers ignore God’s way, and are wandering aimlessly.
  2. Among the people I know and care, is there anyone who is living in so-called “freedom” but actually in bondage and bitterness?  Why?
  3. Grieve with God over this person’s unwillingness to follow God’s way to enjoy genuine freedom.  Pray specifically for this person.  Pray also for an opportunity that I may share the true freedom with him/her.
