Chapter 27
If possible, read the whole chapter to see the full picture of what is happening here.
Then focus on the following section:

45From the sixth hour until the ninth hour darkness came over all the land. 46About
the ninth hour Jesus cried out in a loud voice, “Eloi, Eloi lama sabachthani?”—
which means, “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?” 47When some of
those standing there heard this, they said, “He’s calling Elijah.” 48Immediately one
of them ran and got a sponge. He filled it with wine vinegar, put it on a stick, and
offered it to Jesus to drink. 49The rest said, “Now leave him alone. Let’s see if Elijah
comes to save him.” 50And when Jesus had cried out again in a loud voice, he gave
up his spirit. 51At that moment the curtain of the temple was torn in two from top
to bottom. The earth shook and the rocks split. 52The tombs broke open and the
bodies of many holy people who had died were raised to life. 53They came out of
the tombs, and after Jesus’ resurrection they went into the holy city and appeared to
many people. 54When the centurion and those with him who were guarding Jesus
saw the earthquake and all that had happened, they were terrified, and exclaimed,
“Surely he was the Son of God!”

Meditation:
1. The central event of Christian faith is the incredible humiliation of our God. His
own people demanded his death, his friends deserted him. And now even his
loving Father has turned away.

2. Spend time wrestling with why the Almighty God would choose such a path.
Reread Jesus’ own words a few times to get closer to his experience.

3. What wells up inside you as you meditate on Jesus’ death? Tell Jesus about what
surfaces inside you. Read the passage again if needed. Allow yourself to sink
into the event deeply, being aware of your reaction and talking to Jesus about it.

4. Find a place to be silent. For example, walk in a quiet place or sit in an empty
church sanctuary. Continue meditate on Jesus’ sacrifice for you, and then wait
for what He would have you receive from Him.

Prayer & Journaling:
On your prayer journal, as you listen to God, write down a few thoughts, questions,
words, names, drawings, or anything that has come to your mind during this time.

Proverbs for Today: Prov 4:10-12

Family Time:
Disicuss the meaning of the veil of the temple being split in two. No longer must
persons go through a priest to talk to God. Jesus’ death on the cross made him
our intercessor. Have a time of prayer, encouraging each to thank God for Jesus,
whose death on the cross allows us to come to God with our requests.

Chapter 26
If possible, read the whole chapter to see the full picture of what is happening here.
Then focus on the following section:

36Then Jesus went with his disciples to a place called Gethsemane, and he said to
them, “Sit here while I go over there and pray.” 37He took Peter and the two sons of
Zebedee along with him, and he began to be sorrowful and troubled. 38Then he said
to them, “My soul is overwhelmed with sorrow to the point of death. Stay here and
keep watch with me.” 39Going a little farther, he fell with his face to the ground and
prayed, “My Father, if it is possible, may this cup be taken from me. Yet not as I will,
but as you will.” 40Then he returned to his disciples and found them sleeping. “Could
you men not keep watch with me for one hour?” he asked Peter. 41”Watch and pray
so that you will not fall into temptation. The spirit is willing, but the body is weak.”
42He went away a second time and prayed, “My Father, if it is not possible for this
cup to be taken away unless I drink it, may your will be done.” 43When he came back,
he again found them sleeping, because their eyes were heavy. 44So he left them and
went away once more and prayed the third time, saying the same thing. 45Then he
returned to the disciples and said to them, “Are you still sleeping and resting? Look,
the hour is near, and the Son of Man is betrayed into the hands of sinners. 46Rise, let
us go! Here comes my betrayer!”

Meditation:
1. Here recorded three times of Jesus’ prayer. It clearly portrayed Jesus wrestling
with God’s will and then finally accepting it. It started with Jesus asking if it is
possible for the cup (referring to the expression of God’s judgment in and by the
cross) to be removed from him. The next two times He says, “If this cannot …
your will be done”(v42). In all cases, Jesus addresses God in the most intimate
terms as “my Father”(vv39,42). The disciples, even Peter, were unable to watch
and pray with him.

2. Meditate on Christ’s suffering. Quietly sing this Taize song:
Stay with me, remain here with me
watch and pray, watch and pray. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zkivkORaeJA

Prayer & Journaling:
On your prayer journal, as you listen to God, write down a few thoughts, questions,
words, names, drawings, or anything that has come to your mind during this time.

Chapter 25
If possible, read the whole chapter to see the full picture of what is happening here.

Then focus on the following section:
14”Again, it will be like a man going on a journey, who called his servants and entrusted
his property to them. 15To one he gave five talents of money, to another two talents,
and to another one talent, each according to his ability. Then he went on his journey.
16The man who had received the five talents went at once and put his money to work
and gained five more. 17So also, the one with the two talents gained two more. 18But
the man who had received the one talent went off, dug a hole in the ground and hid his
master’s money. 19”After a long time the master of those servants returned and settled
accounts with them. 20The man who had received the five talents brought the other five.
‘Master,’ he said, ‘you entrusted me with five talents. See, I have gained five more.’ 21”His
master replied, ‘Well done, good and faithful servant! You have been faithful with a few
things; I will put you in charge of many things. Come and share your master’s happiness!’
22”The man with the two talents also came. ‘Master,’ he said, ‘you entrusted me with
two talents; see, I have gained two more.’ 23”His master replied, ‘Well done, good and
faithful servant! You have been faithful with a few things; I will put you in charge of many
things. Come and share your master’s happiness!’ 24”Then the man who had received
the one talent came. ‘Master,’ he said, ‘I knew that you are a hard man, harvesting where
you have not sown and gathering where you have not scattered seed. 25So I was afraid
and went out and hid your talent in the ground. See, here is what belongs to you.’ 26”His
master replied, ‘You wicked, lazy servant! So you knew that I harvest where I have not
sown and gather where I have not scattered seed? 27Well then, you should have put my
money on deposit with the bankers, so that when I returned I would have received it back
with interest. 28” ‘Take the talent from him and give it to the one who has the ten talents.
29For everyone who has will be given more, and he will have an abundance. Whoever
does not have, even what he has will be taken from him. 30And throw that worthless
servant outside, into the darkness, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.’

Meditation:
1. God gives gifts to all his disciples: wealth, skills, time or opportunities. God wants
us to use them fully. This is how we can serve him.

2. The master praised two of the slaves for they had done their best. But not the
third slave. This slave was doing the safest thing, and the least work, to protect
himself from hard work and punishment he thought he might receive if he lost it.

3. God also expects you to use your gifts wisely and completely for Him. How are
you doing? Think of one way you can use your gift today and this week. Ask God
to help you do it well for his sake.

Prayer & Journaling:
On your prayer journal, as you listen to God, write down a few thoughts, questions,
words, names, drawings, or anything that has come to your mind during this time.

Proverbs for Today: Prov 4:4-6

Family Time:
Dramatize the parable. Give them five coins, two, and another one respectively.
Send them out of the room. The first returns with ten coins, the second with
four, the last with only one. Show how the first two were faithful, but the one
doing nothing was not. Conclude by praying that each will use every opportunity
or talent the Lord gives.

Chapter 24
If possible, read the whole chapter to see the full picture of what is happening here.
Then focus on the following section:

3As Jesus was sitting on the Mount of Olives, the disciples came to him privately. “Tell
us,” they said, “when will this happen, and what will be the sign of your coming and
of the end of the age?”
4Jesus answered: “Watch out that no one deceives you. 5For many will come in my
name, claiming, ‘I am the Christ,’ and will deceive many. 6You will hear of wars and
rumors of wars, but see to it that you are not alarmed. Such things must happen,
but the end is still to come. 7Nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against
kingdom. There will be famines and earthquakes in various places. 8All these are the
beginning of birth pains.
9”Then you will be handed over to be persecuted and put to death, and you will be
hated by all nations because of me. 10At that time many will turn away from the
faith and will betray and hate each other, 11and many false prophets will appear and
deceive many people. 12Because of the increase of wickedness, the love of most will
grow cold, 13but he who stands firm to the end will be saved. 14And this gospel of
the kingdom will be preached in the whole world as a testimony to all nations, and
then the end will come.

Meditation:
1. Think about the fact that Jesus Christ will return to this earth. Does this promise
make you happy? Or is it like a danger to you? Make a list of what you might lose
on that great day. Then make a list of what you will gain. Why is it hard for some
Christians to believe that Jesus will return?

2. Imagine that Jesus will return in a month’s time. What would be different in your
church? What would you do?

3. Let this question linger in your heart for a while. Wait for God to show you how
you may get ready for Jesus’ coming.

Prayer & Journaling:
On your prayer journal, as you listen to God, write down a few thoughts, questions,
words, names, drawings, or anything that has come to your mind during this time.

Proverbs for Today: Prov 4:1-3

Family Time:
Explain to children the meaning of Jesus’ second coming. Throughout the
years people have set many different specific times for Jesus’ return. These
false prophets usually get a following. Discuss how we should react to such
predictions. What is the proper attitude to have about Jesus’ second coming?
(See 25:13)

Chapter 23
If possible, read the whole chapter to see the full picture of what is happening here.
Then focus on the following section:

1Then Jesus said to the crowds and to his disciples: 2”The teachers of the law and the
Pharisees sit in Moses’ seat. 3So you must obey them and do everything they tell you.
But do not do what they do, for they do not practice what they preach. 4They tie up
heavy loads and put them on men’s shoulders, but they themselves are not willing to
lift a finger to move them. 5”Everything they do is done for men to see: They make
their phylacteries wide and the tassels on their garments long; 6they love the place
of honor at banquets and the most important seats in the synagogues; 7they love to
be greeted in the marketplaces and to have men call them ‘Rabbi.’ 8”But you are not
to be called ‘Rabbi,’ for you have only one Master and you are all brothers. 9And do
not call anyone on earth ‘father,’ for you have one Father, and he is in heaven. 10Nor
are you to be called ‘teacher,’ for you have one Teacher, the Christ. 11The greatest
among you will be your servant. 12For whoever exalts himself will be humbled, and
whoever humbles himself will be exalted.

Meditation:
1. Jesus’ disciples are commanded not to accept the title rabbi, father, or teacher,
for there is only one final and authoritative teacher – not Moses or Solomon,
but the Christ (v10). Thus, Jesus’ followers must always remain learners. Those
who exalt themselves will be humbled and vice versa (v12). Jesus repeatedly
condemns play-acting, which is what the word “hypocrite” actually means.
Jesus’ criticism is aimed at the dichotomy between appearance and reality,
between word and deed.

2. The scribes and Pharisees were the professors of their time. They studied
Scripture in minute detail and memorized huge chunks of it. Yet all of their study
and memorization didn’t keep them from doing things contrary to what they
were studying. How can you keep from being hypocrite: teaching one thing and
doing another?

Prayer & Journaling:
On your prayer journal, as you listen to God, write down a few thoughts, questions,
words, names, drawings, or anything that has come to your mind during this time.

Proverbs for Today: Prov 3:31-35

Family Time:
Talk about the meaning of being exalted and being humbled. Share a time when
you thought too highly of yourself and were humiliated because of it. Look up
and read aloud Matt 20:26; John 6:3; and 1 Cor 10:12. Have someone to pray
asking God to give each of you true humility.

Chapter 22
If possible, read the whole chapter to see the full picture of what is happening here.
Then focus on the following section:

34Hearing that Jesus had silenced the Sadducees, the Pharisees got together. 35One
of them, an expert in the law, tested him with this question: 36”Teacher, which is the
greatest commandment in the Law?” 37Jesus replied: “ ‘Love the Lord your God with
all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.’ 38This is the first and
greatest commandment. 39And the second is like it: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’
40All the Law and the Prophets hang on these two commandments.”

Meditation:
1. The entire law hinges on its central commands to love God and neighbor. All
the law and the prophets spoke was intended to nurture love for God and love
for one’s neighbor. God is to be loved wholeheartedly, which is the greatest
commandment. But this is impossible without the aid of God; hence the words
of Augustine of Hippo, “Give what you command, Lord, and then command
whatever you will”.

2. In what way do you want to grow in love right now: Toward God? Toward those
in my family? Toward the needy? Toward myself? How would you do it? Use the
above prayer of Augustine of Hippo and ask God to help you grow in love in the
specific way shown by the Holy Spirit.

Prayer & Journaling:
On your prayer journal, as you listen to God, write down a few thoughts, questions,
words, names, drawings, or anything that has come to your mind during this time.

Proverbs for Today: Prov 3:27-30

Family Time:
One of the Pharisees asked Jesus which was the greatest commandment.
Jesus named two. Why would it be difficult to fulfill the second commandment
without fulfilling the first one? Verse 39 suggests we cannot love others until
we first love ourselves. Discuss. Ask God to help you to respect yourself in order
that you might love others as you love yourself.

Chapter 21
If possible, read the whole chapter to see the full picture of what is happening here. Then focus on the following section:

12Jesus entered the temple area and drove out all who were buying and selling
there. He overturned the tables of the money changers and the benches of those
selling doves. 13”It is written,” he said to them, “ ‘My house will be called a house
of prayer,’ but you are making it a ‘den of robbers.’” 14The blind and the lame came
to him at the temple, and he healed them. 15But when the chief priests and the
teachers of the law saw the wonderful things he did and the children shouting in
the temple area, “Hosanna to the Son of David,” they were indignant. 16”Do you
hear what these children are saying?” they asked him. “Yes,” replied Jesus, “have
you never read, “ ‘From the lips of children and infants you have ordained praise’?”
17And he left them and went out of the city to Bethany, where he spent the night.

Meditation:
1. These merchants and money exchangers were extorting the pilgrims and making
a big profit on the trade. They have turned the temple into a high profit lucrative
business enterprise. No wonder Jesus was furious and drove them out.

2. If Jesus were to visit your church today, where might He begin “turning over
tables”? What about your life if Jesus comes to visit your heart? (I Cor 6:19)

Prayer & Journaling:
On your prayer journal, as you listen to God, write down a few thoughts, questions,
words, names, drawings, or anything that has come to your mind during this time.

Proverbs for Today: Prov 3:24-26

Family Time:
What activities do we have at church? Is there any “money exchange”? Why did
Jesus overturn the tables and benches? How should we regard our church, even
if it’s not our own building? What does our treatment of the church tell our true
attitude toward God?

Chapter 20
If possible, read the whole chapter to see the full picture of what is happening here.
Then focus on the following section:

1”For the kingdom of heaven is like a landowner who went out early in the morning
to hire men to work in his vineyard. 2He agreed to pay them a denarius for the day
and sent them into his vineyard. 3”About the third hour he went out and saw others
standing in the marketplace doing nothing. 4He told them, ‘You also go and work in
my vineyard, and I will pay you whatever is right.’ 5So they went. “He went out again
about the sixth hour and the ninth hour and did the same thing. 6About the eleventh
hour he went out and found still others standing around. He asked them, ‘Why have
you been standing here all day long doing nothing?’ 7” ‘Because no one has hired
us,’ they answered. “He said to them, ‘You also go and work in my vineyard.’ 8”When
evening came, the owner of the vineyard said to his foreman, ‘Call the workers and
pay them their wages, beginning with the last ones hired and going on to the first.’
9”The workers who were hired about the eleventh hour came and each received
a denarius. 10So when those came who were hired first, they expected to receive
more. But each one of them also received a denarius. 11When they received it, they
began to grumble against the landowner. 12’These men who were hired last worked
only one hour,’ they said, ‘and you have made them equal to us who have borne
the burden of the work and the heat of the day.’ 13”But he answered one of them,
‘Friend, I am not being unfair to you. Didn’t you agree to work for a denarius? 14Take
your pay and go. I want to give the man who was hired last the same as I gave you.
15Don’t I have the right to do what I want with my own money? Or are you envious
because I am generous?’ 16”So the last will be first, and the first will be last.”

Meditation:
1. This story troubles many. It seems obvious that the owner of the vineyard wasn’t
being fair. Jesus is saying that some people want to put relationship with God on
a equal-work-equal-pay basis. And these folks often assume they’ll be rewarded
for being so busy.

2. Relationship with God is based on his generosity (v15), his grace, not our works.
We don’t advance spiritually by being busy.

3. Are you becoming so caught up in doing things for God that you forget to simply
love Him? Do you forget to stop, listen to people, and try to respond to their
needs? Are you actually drying up spiritually but still spending your energies in
an unproductive way? What is God telling you?

Prayer & Journaling:

Chapter 19
If possible, read the whole chapter to see the full picture of what is happening here.
Then focus on the following section:

23 Then Jesus said to his disciples, “Truly I tell you, it is hard for someone who is rich to
enter the kingdom of heaven. 24 Again I tell you, it is easier for a camel to go through
the eye of a needle than for someone who is rich to enter the kingdom of God.” 25
When the disciples heard this, they were greatly astonished and asked, “Who then
can be saved?” 26 Jesus looked at them and said, “With man this is impossible, but
with God all things are possible.”

Meditation:
1. When Jesus remarked that it is difficult for a rich man to enter the kingdom, the
disciples were shocked. In general, people view the wealthy as blessed by God,
for they had the opportunity to do good with their wealth and so gain merit with
God.

2. Jesus had a different perspective. The more we have, the more our possessions
may possess us! It is hard for a person with many resources tied up in this world
to focus his or her attention on the next.

3. Thank God that he can do what we cannot. We can be saved for eternity. And we
can be saved from slavery to our wealth so that we can instead become slaves
of God.

4. Do you love God above all else? Is there anything hindering you to become a
true disciple of Jesus Christ?

Prayer & Journaling:
On your prayer journal, as you listen to God, write down a few thoughts, questions,
words, names, drawings, or anything that has come to your mind during this time.

Family Time:
A rich young man asked Jesus how he could get eternal life. Jesus’ answer was
unique to this situation – sell his possessions and give to the poor. How does
this compare with what he told Nicodemus (John 3)? How much wealth must
we have, to love riches so much that they keep us from eternal life? Read Prov
11:28; 1 Tim 6:10.

Chapter 18
If possible, read the whole chapter to see the full picture of what is happening here.
Then focus on the following section:

21Then Peter came to Jesus and asked, “Lord, how many times shall I forgive my
brother when he sins against me? Up to seven times?” 22Jesus answered, “I tell you,
not seven times, but seventy-seven times. 23”Therefore, the kingdom of heaven
is like a king who wanted to settle accounts with his servants. 24As he began the
settlement, a man who owed him ten thousand talents was brought to him. 25Since
he was not able to pay, the master ordered that he and his wife and his children and
all that he had be sold to repay the debt. 26”The servant fell on his knees before him.
‘Be patient with me,’ he begged, ‘and I will pay back everything.’ 27The servant’s
master took pity on him, canceled the debt and let him go. 28”But when that servant
went out, he found one of his fellow servants who owed him a hundred denarii. He
grabbed him and began to choke him. ‘Pay back what you owe me!’ he demanded.
29”His fellow servant fell to his knees and begged him, ‘Be patient with me, and I
will pay you back.’ 30”But he refused. Instead, he went off and had the man thrown
into prison until he could pay the debt. 31When the other servants saw what had
happened, they were greatly distressed and went and told their master everything
that had happened. 32”Then the master called the servant in. ‘You wicked servant,’
he said, ‘I canceled all that debt of yours because you begged me to. 33Shouldn’t you
have had mercy on your fellow servant just as I had on you?’ 34In anger his master
turned him over to the jailers to be tortured, until he should pay back all he owed.
35”This is how my heavenly Father will treat each of you unless you forgive your
brother from your heart.”

Meditation:
1. Jesus gave us a compelling reason to forgive one another. A servant who owed
the king a huge debt was pardoned. But he, in turn, treated another servant
harshly who owed him a little. The king was angry as it was hardly appropriate
for one who had been forgiven so much to be so unforgiving for so little a debt.

2. This is a reminder for us when we harden our hearts toward a brother or sister
after a few repeated hurts. After all, God, the great King, has forgiven us an
absolutely unpayable debt, our sins.

3. Who do I find it hard to forgive? Think about the forgiveness I have received
from the Lord. Imagine myself as the first servant. Ask for grace to forgive the
other person.

Prayer & Journaling:
On your prayer journal, as you listen to God, write down a few thoughts, questions,
words, names, drawings, or anything that has come to your mind during this time.

Chapter 17
If possible, read the whole chapter to see the full picture of what is happening here.
Then focus on the following section:

1After six days Jesus took with him Peter, James and John the brother of James, and
led them up a high mountain by themselves. 2There he was transfigured before
them. His face shone like the sun, and his clothes became as white as the light. 3Just
then there appeared before them Moses and Elijah, talking with Jesus. 4Peter said
to Jesus, “Lord, it is good for us to be here. If you wish, I will put up three shelters—
one for you, one for Moses and one for Elijah.” 5While he was still speaking, a bright
cloud enveloped them, and a voice from the cloud said, “This is my Son, whom I love;
with him I am well pleased. Listen to him!” 6When the disciples heard this, they fell
facedown to the ground, terrified. 7But Jesus came and touched them. “Get up,” he
said. “Don’t be afraid.” 8When they looked up, they saw no one except Jesus. 9As
they were coming down the mountain, Jesus instructed them, “Don’t tell anyone
what you have seen, until the Son of Man has been raised from the dead.” 10The
disciples asked him, “Why then do the teachers of the law say that Elijah must come
first?” 11Jesus replied, “To be sure, Elijah comes and will restore all things. 12But I tell
you, Elijah has already come, and they did not recognize him, but have done to him
everything they wished. In the same way the Son of Man is going to suffer at their
hands.” 13Then the disciples understood that he was talking to them about John the
Baptist.

Meditation:
1. Peter, James and John witnessed a special event on the mountaintop. They fell
down before the transfigured Jesus and when they looked up “they saw no one
except Jesus”. In the brightness that blazed from Jesus, in the brilliant cloud that
enveloped them, and in the voice announcing Jesus as God’s Son, they had a
glimpse of Christ’s glory. The disciples were deeply, completely, totally immersed
in worship.

2. How did you ever come to realize that Jesus was the one above all others that
you should listen to? How has God said to you, “This is my child, whom I love,
with whom I am well pleased”? What was your response?

21From that time on Jesus began to explain to his disciples that he must go to

teachers of the law, and that he must be killed and on the third day be raised to life.
22Peter took him aside and began to rebuke him. “Never, Lord!” he said. “This shall
never happen to you!” 23Jesus turned and said to Peter, “Get behind me, Satan!
You are a stumbling block to me; you do not have in mind the things of God, but the
things of men.” 24Then Jesus said to his disciples, “If anyone would come after me,
he must deny himself and take up his cross and follow me. 25For whoever wants to
save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for me will find it. 26What good will
it be for a man if he gains the whole world, yet forfeits his soul? Or what can a man
give in exchange for his soul? 27For the Son of Man is going to come in his Father’s
glory with his angels, and then he will reward each person according to what he has
done. 28I tell you the truth, some who are standing here will not taste death before
they see the Son of Man coming in his kingdom.”

Meditation:
1. Peter didn’t like the idea of Christ facing death by crucifixion so he urged Jesus
to avoid it! Jesus angrily pushed him away for he lacked the perspective of God.
Every disciple must learn to look at his or her life from God’s perspective and
“take up his cross and follow”. Most of the time, our cross doesn’t represent
suffering or death, but it represents the plan and purpose of God for each of us.
We need to find and do God’s will just like Jesus did.

2. We often may think that if we do the will of God, we will “lose our life”. However,
the truth is that we will only “gain” our life and become what we most desire to
be when we do the will of God each day.

3. From Jesus’ “gain and lose” teaching (vv25-26), what do you think of your
current priorities?

Prayer & Journaling:
On your prayer journal, as you listen to God, write down a few thoughts, questions,
words, names, drawings, or anything that has come to your mind during this time.

Proverbs for Today: Prov 3:9-10

Family Time:
If we want to follow Jesus, what three things must we do? These three are
different yet closely related. Bring out the Cross which was made for chapter
10. What have you done to show you are carrying the cross to follow Jesus since
the cross was made? Be as specific and practical as possible.

Chapter 15
If possible, read the whole chapter to see the full picture of what is happening here.
Then focus on the following section:

10Jesus called the crowd to him and said, “Listen and understand. 11What goes into
a man’s mouth does not make him ‘unclean,’ but what comes out of his mouth, that
is what makes him ‘unclean.’ “ 12Then the disciples came to him and asked, “Do you
know that the Pharisees were offended when they heard this?” 13He replied, “Every
plant that my heavenly Father has not planted will be pulled up by the roots. 14Leave
them; they are blind guides. If a blind man leads a blind man, both will fall into a pit.”
15Peter said, “Explain the parable to us.” 16”Are you still so dull?” Jesus asked them.
17”Don’t you see that whatever enters the mouth goes into the stomach and then
out of the body? 18But the things that come out of the mouth come from the heart,
and these make a man ‘unclean.’ 19For out of the heart come evil thoughts, murder,
adultery, sexual immorality, theft, false testimony, slander. 20These are what make
a man ‘unclean’; but eating with unwashed hands does not make him ‘unclean.’ “

Meditation:
1. Jesus seems to spend a lot of time provoking the Pharisees by speaking harshly
to them. Yet, these are supposed to be the most devout leaders in the entire
nation. We may very likely be tempted to think likewise, “I’m glad I’m not like
them”. Actually, we are much similar to the Pharisees than we’d like to admit.

2. Are you like the Pharisees, caring much about how you look on the outside, but
neglect the purity on the inside; focusing on legalism/following the rules instead
of being faithful to God and sensitive to his Spirit?

3. Read through the sins listed in v19. Ask the Holy Spirit to shine in your heart for
you to see the filth and darkness there. Ask God for forgiveness and cleansing
of your heart.

Prayer & Journaling:
On your prayer journal, as you listen to God, write down a few thoughts, questions,
words, names, drawings, or anything that has come to your mind during this time.

Proverbs for Today: Prov 3:5-8

Family Time:
Talk about where sin begins. If the conclusion is the heart, discuss how the seed
of sin gets there. Do we open our heart to those seed by what we read, what
we watch, and what we listen to? What part do our friends play in our hearts
being open to the seeds of sin? Pray that God will give you wisdom as you make
your choices.

Chapter 14
If possible, read the whole chapter to see the full picture of what is happening here.
Then focus on the following section:
22Immediately Jesus made the disciples get into the boat and go on ahead of him
to the other side, while he dismissed the crowd. 23After he had dismissed them, he
went up on a mountainside by himself to pray. When evening came, he was there
alone, 24but the boat was already a considerable distance from land, buffeted by
the waves because the wind was against it. 25During the fourth watch of the night
Jesus went out to them, walking on the lake. 26When the disciples saw him walking
on the lake, they were terrified. “It’s a ghost,” they said, and cried out in fear. 27But
Jesus immediately said to them: “Take courage! It is I. Don’t be afraid.” 28”Lord, if it’s
you,” Peter replied, “tell me to come to you on the water.” 29”Come,” he said. Then
Peter got down out of the boat, walked on the water and came toward Jesus. 30But
when he saw the wind, he was afraid and, beginning to sink, cried out, “Lord, save
me!” 31Immediately Jesus reached out his hand and caught him. “You of little faith,”
he said, “why did you doubt?” 32And when they climbed into the boat, the wind died
down. 33Then those who were in the boat worshiped him, saying, “Truly you are the
Son of God.”

Meditation:
1. What did Jesus do after dismissing the disciples and the crowd? Can you see
this pattern in Jesus’ ministries? Why did Jesus want to pray alone? What’s the
significance of this pattern of Jesus? What can you learn from him?

2. Jesus takes his solitude seriously. Consider taking a one-day silent retreat at a
center or just find a place isolated from the hustle and bustle of everyday life.
Keep a notebook handy and write down what you hear and the impressions you
receive from God. What did you learn?

Prayer & Journaling:
On your prayer journal, as you listen to God, write down a few thoughts, questions,
words, names, drawings, or anything that has come to your mind during this time.

Proverbs for Today: Prov 3:1-4

Chapter 13
If possible, read the whole chapter to see the full picture of what is happening here.
Then focus on the following section:
1That same day Jesus went out of the house and sat by the lake. 2Such large crowds
gathered around him that he got into a boat and sat in it, while all the people stood
on the shore. 3Then he told them many things in parables, saying: “A farmer went
out to sow his seed. 4As he was scattering the seed, some fell along the path, and the
birds came and ate it up. 5Some fell on rocky places, where it did not have much soil.
It sprang up quickly, because the soil was shallow. 6But when the sun came up, the
plants were scorched, and they withered because they had no root. 7Other seed fell
among thorns, which grew up and choked the plants. 8Still other seed fell on good
soil, where it produced a crop—a hundred, sixty or thirty times what was sown. 9He
who has ears, let him hear.”
18”Listen then to what the parable of the sower means: 19When anyone hears the
message about the kingdom and does not understand it, the evil one comes and
snatches away what was sown in his heart. This is the seed sown along the path.
20The one who received the seed that fell on rocky places is the man who hears the
word and at once receives it with joy. 21But since he has no root, he lasts only a short
time. When trouble or persecution comes because of the word, he quickly falls away.
22The one who received the seed that fell among the thorns is the man who hears
the word, but the worries of this life and the deceitfulness of wealth choke it, making
it unfruitful. 23But the one who received the seed that fell on good soil is the man
who hears the word and understands it. He produces a crop, yielding a hundred, sixty
or thirty times what was sown.”

Meditation:
1. This parable makes clear that reception of the gospel depends on the soil, i.e. the
condition of the recipient. In this parable, the seed and the sower are the same
in each case, but the soil varies. There are many who do not respond favourably
to Jesus’ message, but the few who did produced remarkable fruit.

2. The explanation (vv18-23) makes clear that there are a variety of factors
hindering hearing – Satan, the lure of wealth, trouble, persecution, worries.
Which soil do you belong to? How will God’s word take root in your life?

Prayer & Journaling:
On your prayer journal, as you listen to God, write down a few thoughts, questions,
words, names, drawings, or anything that has come to your mind during this time.

Proverbs for Today: Prov 2:20-22

Family Time:
After reading today’s passage, plant a few small seeds in a paper cup. Place it
whether it will get sunshine. Keep it watered. Check on it from time to time.
When the seeds come up, bring the cup back to family time to see the results,
explain v8 again.

20壓傷的蘆葦,他不折斷;將殘的燈火,他不吹滅;

Chapter 12
If possible, read the whole chapter to see the full picture of what is happening here.
Then focus on the following section:
15Aware of this, Jesus withdrew from that place. Many followed him, and he healed
all their sick, 16warning them not to tell who he was. 17This was to fulfill what was
spoken through the prophet Isaiah:
18”Here is my servant whom I have chosen, the one I love, in whom I delight;
I will put my Spirit on him, and he will proclaim justice to the nations.
19He will not quarrel or cry out; no one will hear his voice in the streets.
20A bruised reed he will not break, and a smoldering wick he will not snuff out,
till he leads justice to victory.
21In his name the nations will put their hope.”

Meditation:
1. Jesus didn’t have a smooth ministry. In fact, he met a lot of opposition. Jesus
responded to the hostility by simply asking those healed “not to tell who he
was” and leaving the area. Why?

2. Matthew explained by quoting a passage from one of Isaiah’s “servant songs” (Is
41:1-9). Messiah “will not quarrel or cry out”. He will be so gentle that He will
not even snap a worthless reed flute, or discard a soot-filled candle wick.

3. Continue to concentrate on your Lord Saviour and get to know him deeper by
reflecting on the characteristics listed in the passage. Praise and thank him for
his humility and gentleness and also the wonderful work he’s done in your life.

Prayer & Journaling:
On your prayer journal, as you listen to God, write down a few thoughts, questions,
words, names, drawings, or anything that has come to your mind during this time.

Proverbs for Today: Prov 2:16-19

Family Time:

Chapter 11
If possible, read the whole chapter to see the full picture of what is happening here.
Then focus on the following section:
1After Jesus had finished instructing his twelve disciples, he went on from there to
teach and preach in the towns of Galilee. 2When John heard in prison what Christ
was doing, he sent his disciples 3to ask him, “Are you the one who was to come, or
should we expect someone else?” 4Jesus replied, “Go back and report to John what
you hear and see: 5The blind receive sight, the lame walk, those who have leprosy
are cured, the deaf hear, the dead are raised, and the good news is preached to the
poor. 6Blessed is the man who does not fall away on account of me.”

Meditation:
1. Have you ever been like John the Baptist doubting Jesus after a period of
unresolved difficulties and problems? How might Jesus’ reply to John help to
answer your doubts?

2. Where have you seen the work of Jesus in your life and lives of those around
you? Write down at least three things. Then, utter a thanksgiving payer to God.

3. What do “Remembering God’s work, a Grateful heart, and a Difficult Situation”
have in common in bringing us to God?

Prayer & Journaling:
On your prayer journal, as you listen to God, write down a few thoughts, questions,
words, names, drawings, or anything that has come to your mind during this time.

Proverbs for Today: Prov 2:13-15

Family Time:
How do we share the gospel with other people? Jesus told his disciples to tell
John “what you hear and see”. Tell people what God has done in our lives is the
best way of sharing the gospel. What can you tell people? Who do you want
to tell it to? Decide when you will tell and pray for the person to be willing to
listen.

Chapter 10
If possible, read the whole chapter to see the full picture of what is happening here.
Then focus on the following section:
32”Whoever acknowledges me before men, I will also acknowledge him before my
Father in heaven. 33But whoever disowns me before men, I will disown him before
my Father in heaven. 34”Do not suppose that I have come to bring peace to the
earth. I did not come to bring peace, but a sword. 35 For I have come to turn “ ‘a
man against his father, a daughter against her mother, a daughter-in-law against
her mother-in-law – 36a man’s enemies will be the members of his own household.’
37”Anyone who loves his father or mother more than me is not worthy of me; anyone
who loves his son or daughter more than me is not worthy of me; 38and anyone who
does not take his cross and follow me is not worthy of me. 39Whoever finds his life
will lose it, and whoever loses his life for my sake will find it.

Meditation
1. The marks of Jesus’ disciples according to this passage include: acknowledging
Jesus before men (v32), placing loyalty to Christ above even the bonds of family
(vv34-35), taking up his cross and following Jesus by subjecting one’s will to God
even as Jesus chose to subject Himself to the cross (v38), surrendering all for the
sake of his Lord (v37).

2. In a culture that values family highly, is it possible that you can be blinded by
familial loyalty to the truth of the Gospel? In what ways might we compromise
Scripture in order to have “peace” in our homes?
3. What does “take his cross and follow Jesus” mean to me? How am I sharing
Christ’ suffering in discipleship? Have I experience the joy Paul talked about?

Prayer & Journaling:
On your prayer journal, as you listen to God, write down a few thoughts, questions,
words, names, drawings, or anything that has come to your mind during this time.

Proverbs for Today: Prov 2:9-12

Family Time:
Jesus told his disciples that if they want to be true disciples of Jesus, they have
to carry the cross to follow Jesus. Discuss what it means to carry the cross to
follow Jesus. How to do it in daily lives? Prepare some craft material ahead of

it. Post it up in the kitchen as a constant reminder for the whole family

Chapter 9
If possible, read the whole chapter to see the full picture of what is happening here.
Then focus on the following section:
9As Jesus went on from there, he saw a man named Matthew sitting at the tax
collector’s booth. “Follow me,” he told him, and Matthew got up and followed him.
10While Jesus was having dinner at Matthew’s house, many tax collectors and
“sinners” came and ate with him and his disciples. 11When the Pharisees saw this,
they asked his disciples, “Why does your teacher eat with tax collectors and ‘sinners’?”
12On hearing this, Jesus said, “It is not the healthy who need a doctor, but the sick.
13But go and learn what this means: ‘I desire mercy, not sacrifice.’ For I have not
come to call the righteous, but sinners.”

Meditation
1. The calling of Matthew exhibited Jesus’ calling of outcasts and despised sinners.
The Pharisees, with their strict following of both ritual and moral purity, could
not understand why Jesus would have meals with these unworthy people.
Whom can you identify more easily, Matthew or the Pharisees? Why?

2. Do you see Jesus’ calling of you, inviting you to follow Him? What’s your
response? Do you enjoy eating, drinking, celebrating, resting, having fun with
Jesus?

3. Why did Jesus quote “I desire mercy, not sacrifice”(Ho 6:6)? Could it be because
love and mercy reveal that we have a transformed heart, while sacrifice is an
outward act that can be done regardless of the condition of our heart?

Prayer & Journaling:
On your prayer journal, as you listen to God, write down a few thoughts, questions,
words, names, drawings, or anything that has come to your mind during this time.

Proverbs for Today: Prov 2:6-8

Family Time:
Plan to go to a Christian downtown mission or food bank to volunteer as a family.
Discuss what you will be doing, whom you will be seeing, and why you should do
this. Have a celebration and thanksgiving prayer after coming back. Discuss how
each feels about the volunteer work. If possible, plan another one later.

Chapter 8
If possible, read the whole chapter to see the full picture of what is happening here.
Then focus on the following section:
1When he came down from the mountainside, large crowds followed him. 2A man
with leprosy came and knelt before him and said, “Lord, if you are willing, you can
make me clean.”
3Jesus reached out his hand and touched the man. “I am willing,” he said. “Be clean!”
Immediately he was cured of his leprosy. 4Then Jesus said to him, “See that you don’t
tell anyone. But go, show yourself to the priest and offer the gift Moses commanded,
as a testimony to them.”

Meditation
1. The Leper realizes that Jesus has the power as God to heal sicknesses and to
correct evils that torment mankind. But the leper also realizes that Jesus has a
choice about whether to heal or not. Again and again Jesus exercised His power
as God, and each time it was to help or heal a human being in need. Christ is
willing. And He is able too.

2. Recall a time when you were touched by the loving hand of God. What was it?
How did you feel?

3. What did your past experience of God’s touch and healing teach you about God’s
power and His love? Spend a few moments conversing with God and listening to
what God is trying to tell you.

Prayer & Journaling:
On your prayer journal, as you listen to God, write down a few thoughts, questions,
words, names, drawings, or anything that has come to your mind during this time.

Proverbs for Today: Prov 2:1-5

Family Time:
Discuss the passage. Ask anybody to share a time when he/she was sick. Did
anybody prayed for him/her? Share what happened after people’s prayer. Close
by giving thanks to God for his power to heal and his love for us all.

Chapter 7
If possible, read the whole chapter to see the full picture of what is happening here.
Then focus on the following section:
7”Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be
opened to you. 8For everyone who asks receives; he who seeks finds; and to him who
knocks, the door will be opened.
9”Which of you, if his son asks for bread, will give him a stone? 10Or if he asks for a
fish, will give him a snake? 11If you, then, though you are evil, know how to give good
gifts to your children, how much more will your Father in heaven give good gifts to
those who ask him! 12So in everything, do to others what you would have them do
to you, for this sums up the Law and the Prophets.

Meditation
1. Each of these images of prayer (ask, seek, knock) suggests persistence. Each also
conveys a promise. Ask, it will be given; seek, you will find; knock, the door will
be opened. What encourages us to be actively involved in prayer, and to claim
these promises, is the certainty that God is our Father. Our Father loves us. He
provides what we need, not because we bother Him, but because He cares. And
He is eager to give us good gifts.

2. When you pray to make a request to God, do you rely on your persistence to
“persuade” God? Or do you rely on God’s pervasive love and rest assured of the
good gifts He’s going to give you?

3. Prayer & Journaling:

4. On your prayer journal, as you listen to God, write down a few thoughts,
questions, words, names, drawings, or anything that has come to your mind
during this time.

Proverbs for Today: Prov 1:29-33

Family Time:
Play a skit using this passage. Have the children to play parent and parent play
children begging for food but receiving stone. Discuss the passage. Close by
giving thanks to God for caring and providing good things to us.

Chapter 6
If possible, read the whole chapter to see the full picture of what is happening here.
Then focus on the following section:
5”And when you pray, do not be like the hypocrites, for they love to pray standing
in the synagogues and on the street corners to be seen by men. I tell you the truth,
they have received their reward in full. 6But when you pray, go into your room, close
the door and pray to your Father, who is unseen. Then your Father, who sees what
is done in secret, will reward you. 7And when you pray, do not keep on babbling like
pagans, for they think they will be heard because of their many words. 8Do not be
like them, for your Father knows what you need before you ask him.
9”This, then, is how you should pray: “ ‘Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your
name, 10your kingdom come, your will be done on earth as it is in heaven. 11Give us
today our daily bread. 12Forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors.
13And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from the evil one.

Meditation
Lord, I cannot say “Our”… if my faith has no room for other people and their needs.
Lord, I cannot say “Father”… if I fail to resemble You in the way I live my daily life.
Lord, I cannot say “Who are in Heaven”… if my attention is focused only on earthly things.
Lord, I cannot say “Hallowed be Thy name”… if I who am called by your name am not holy.
Lord, I cannot say “Thy Kingdom come”… if I fail to acknowledge your sovereignty in my
life.
Lord, I cannot say “On earth as it is in Heaven”… unless I am truly ready to serve You here
and now.
Lord, I cannot say “Give us this day our daily bread”… without doing an honest day’s work,
and without considering the needs of those less fortunate.
Lord, I cannot say “Forgive us our debts as we forgive our debtors”… if I harbor a grudge
against my brother or sister.
Lord, I cannot say “Lead us not into temptation”… if I deliberately choose to remain in a
situation where I am likely to be tempted. Lord, I cannot say “Deliver us from evil”… if I am
not prepared to take a stand against injustice in my society.
Lord, I cannot say “Thine is the Kingdom, the Power, and the Glory”… if I do not submit to
Christ as King, if I fail to trust You to act in my life, or if in pride I seek my own glory.
Lord, I cannot say “Amen”… unless I can honestly say, “Come what may, this is my prayer.”

Chapter 5
If possible, read the whole chapter to see the full picture of what is happening here.
Then focus on the following section:
1Now when he saw the crowds, he went up on a mountainside and sat down. His
disciples came to him, 2and he began to teach them saying:
3”Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
4Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted.
5Blessed are the meek, for they will inherit the earth.
6Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be filled.
7Blessed are the merciful, for they will be shown mercy.
8Blessed are the pure in heart, for they will see God.
9Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called sons of God.
10Blessed are those who are persecuted because of righteousness, for theirs is the
kingdom of heaven.

Meditation
1. Jesus is contrasting the two ways to blessedness: the kingdom way of pure gift
from God and the wordly way of human attainment. Jesus takes those people
ordinarily thought to be unblessed or unblessable and shows that there is
something about life in the kingdom of God that makes them blessed.
2. Are you a blessed person according to Jesus’ teaching here? Why?
3. How would you allow God’s blessing flow from you to your community and
people around you?

Prayer & Journaling:
On your prayer journal, as you listen to God, write down a few thoughts, questions,
words, names, drawings, or anything that has come to your mind during this time.

Proverbs for Today: Prov 1:20-23

Family Time:
Read this passage slowly once. Ask, what is blessing? Do you like to receive
blessing? What does God’s blessing mean? How is that different from what
people usually think? Pray for God’s true blessing for the family and the loved
ones.

Chapter 4
If possible, read the whole chapter to see the full picture of what is happening here.
Then focus on the following section:
1 Then Jesus was led by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil. 2
After fasting forty days and forty nights, he was hungry. 3 The tempter came to him
and said, “If you are the Son of God, tell these stones to become bread.” 4 Jesus
answered, “It is written: ‘Man shall not live on bread alone, but on every word that
comes from the mouth of God.’” 5 Then the devil took him to the holy city and had
him stand on the highest point of the temple. 6 “If you are the Son of God,” he said,
“throw yourself down. For it is written: “‘He will command his angels concerning you,
and they will lift you up in their hands, so that you will not strike your foot against a
stone.’” 7 Jesus answered him, “It is also written: ‘Do not put the Lord your God to
the test.’” 8 Again, the devil took him to a very high mountain and showed him all the
kingdoms of the world and their splendor. 9 “All this I will give you,” he said, “if you
will bow down and worship me.” 10 Jesus said to him, “Away from me, Satan! For it is
written: ‘Worship the Lord your God, and serve him only.’” 11 Then the devil left him,
and angels came and attended him.

Meditation
1. If Jesus had turned stone into break, thrown himself down from the pinnacle of
the temple. or worshiped Satan, in order to feed himself, prove himself to the
crowds, or gain his kingdom without dying for it, he would no longer have been
the obedient son of God worthy of our imitation.

2. However, Jesus didn’t take the shortcut to glory, but followed the hard and long
path of obedience, lived by God and resisted temptation by relying on God’s
word. God’s wisdom isn’t just for us to know the truth, but to obey it.

3. What’s your attitude toward God’s word? How do you resist when temptation
comes?

Prayer & Journaling:
On your prayer journal, as you listen to God, write down a few thoughts, questions,
words, names, drawings, or anything that has come to your mind during this time.
Proverbs for Today: Prov 1:15-19

Have you ever been tempted to do something you know you shouldn’t? How
did you stay strong at such time? What did Jesus do to fight the temptation?

Then focus on the following section:
1 In those days John the Baptist came, preaching in the wilderness of Judea 2 and
saying, “Repent, for the kingdom of heaven has come near.” 3 This is he who was
spoken of through the prophet Isaiah: “A voice of one calling in the wilderness,
‘Prepare the way for the Lord, make straight paths for him.’” 4 John’s clothes were
made of camel’s hair, and he had a leather belt around his waist. His food was locusts
and wild honey. 5 People went out to him from Jerusalem and all Judea and the
whole region of the Jordan. 6 Confessing their sins, they were baptized by him in the
Jordan River. 7 But when he saw many of the Pharisees and Sadducees coming to
where he was baptizing, he said to them: “You brood of vipers! Who warned you to
flee from the coming wrath? 8 Produce fruit in keeping with repentance. 9 And do
not think you can say to yourselves, ‘We have Abraham as our father.’ I tell you that
out of these stones God can raise up children for Abraham. 10 The ax is already at the
root of the trees, and every tree that does not produce good fruit will be cut down
and thrown into the fire. 11 “I baptize you with water for repentance. But after me
comes one who is more powerful than I, whose sandals I am not worthy to carry. He
will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire. 12 His winnowing fork is in his hand, and
he will clear his threshing floor, gathering his wheat into the barn and burning up the
chaff with unquenchable fire.”

Meditation
1. Religious leaders believed they were saved by righteous living. When John told
them to bear fruit in keeping with repentance (v8) he was telling them to change
their mind about their need for a savior and teach others to do the same.

2. Salvation is not a fruit bearing event. When Jesus enters a life by faith, he does a
fundamental transformation of heart and behaviour. Salvation goes hand in hand
with actually living it out. Bearing fruit comes after we’re saved as we influence
others through our changed attitude and behavior, and by implementing the
Lord’s plans for our life.

3. How many times have you tried to change and only to be back at the same old
habits and lifestyle as before? Quit what you’re doing and look at what God is
doing inside and out; and choose to rely on the Spirit to transform you.

Prayer & Journaling:
On your prayer journal, as you listen to God, write down a few thoughts, questions,
words, names, drawings, or anything that has come to your mind during this time.

Proverbs for Today: Prov 1:10-14

Family Time:
What is REPENTANCE? Who needs it? Why? How and when do we repent?
What happens when we repent? Lead the family in a prayer of confession and
repentance and ask God to help each one to “produce fruit in keeping with
repentance”

Chapter 2
If possible, read the whole chapter to see the full picture of what is happening here.
Then focus on the following section:
1 After Jesus was born in Bethlehem in Judea, during the time of King Herod, Magi
from the east came to Jerusalem 2 and asked, “Where is the one who has been born
king of the Jews? We saw his star when it rose and have come to worship him.” 3
When King Herod heard this he was disturbed, and all Jerusalem with him. 4 When
he had called together all the people’s chief priests and teachers of the law, he asked
them where the Messiah was to be born. 5 “In Bethlehem in Judea,” they replied,
“for this is what the prophet has written: 6 “‘But you, Bethlehem, in the land of
Judah, are by no means least among the rulers of Judah; for out of you will come
a ruler who will shepherd my people Israel.’” 7 Then Herod called the Magi secretly
and found out from them the exact time the star had appeared. 8 He sent them to
Bethlehem and said, “Go and search carefully for the child. As soon as you find him,
report to me, so that I too may go and worship him.” 9 After they had heard the king,
they went on their way, and the star they had seen when it rose went ahead of them
until it stopped over the place where the child was. 10 When they saw the star, they
were overjoyed. 11 On coming to the house, they saw the child with his mother
Mary, and they bowed down and worshiped him. Then they opened their treasures
and presented him with gifts of gold, frankincense and myrrh. 12 And having been
warned in a dream not to go back to Herod, they returned to their country by another
route.

Meditation:
1. The word “worship” occurred three times in this passage. The wise men knew
Jesus as “the one who has been born king of the Jews”. And they came all the
way “to worship him.”

2. Worship isn’t a private matter between individuals and God only. It is not God’s
intention for you to enjoy his love and forgiveness in private. Worship integrates
our relationship with God as well as that among believers. In worship, we
become one body to love, to forgive and to serve.

3. How’s your worship? Do you enjoy God’s love and his forgiveness in worship?
Do you become part of the body with other saints? Is there any obstacle that is
hindering you worship God totally?

Prayer & Journaling:
On your prayer journal, as you listen to God, write down a few thoughts, questions,
words, names, drawings, or anything that has come to your mind during this time.

Proverbs for Today: Prov 1:7-9

Family Time:
As a family, try to imagine the night Jesus was born. Show some pictures
of Jesus’ birth. Sing a verse of “O little town of Bethlehem” (even if it’s not
Christmas time.) Let each one thank God for sending Jesus.

Chapter 1
If possible, read the whole chapter to see the full picture of what is happening here.
Then focus on the following section:
1 This is the genealogy of Jesus the Messiah the son of David, the son of Abraham
18 This is how the birth of Jesus the Messiah came about: His mother Mary was
pledged to be married to Joseph, but before they came together, she was found to be
pregnant through the Holy Spirit. 19 Because Joseph her husband was faithful to the
law, and yet did not want to expose her to public disgrace, he had in mind to divorce
her quietly. 20 But after he had considered this, an angel of the Lord appeared to
him in a dream and said, “Joseph son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary home
as your wife, because what is conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit. 21 She will
give birth to a son, and you are to give him the name Jesus, because he will save his
people from their sins.” 22 All this took place to fulfill what the Lord had said through
the prophet: 23 “The virgin will conceive and give birth to a son, and they will call
him Immanuel” (which means “God with us”). 24 When Joseph woke up, he did what
the angel of the Lord had commanded him and took Mary home as his wife. 25 But
he did not consummate their marriage until she gave birth to a son. And he gave him
the name Jesus.

Meditation:
1. Joseph is a righteous man, faithful to God’s law (v19). He feared that Mary would
be subject to a public disgrace, and perhaps even stoning for immoral sexual
activity. God directed Joseph through an angel in a dream. He obeyed and took
Mary home as his wife.

2. The angel quoted Isaiah 7:14 to tell Joseph “the virgin will conceive and give
birth to a son, and they will call him Immanuel”(v23). Here God is announcing
to the world that he will be with us, he will experience all the limits, shame and
suffering we go through.

3. How could the fact that “God became flesh and living among us” have changed
your life? What could you do to make this fact more a reality?

Prayer & Journaling:
On your prayer journal, as you listen to God, write down a few thoughts, questions,
words, names, drawings, or anything that has come to your mind during this time.

Proverbs for Today: Prov 1:1-6

Family Time:
God spoke to Joseph in a dream and helped him to make the right decision. How
does God talk to people today? Is there any decision the family or someone is
facing? As a family, pray for God’s direction and our obedience to God’s word.

Chapter 72
1 Endow the king with your justice, O God,
the royal son with your righteousness.
2 May he judge your people in righteousness,
your afflicted ones with justice.
3 May the mountains bring prosperity to the people,
the hills the fruit of righteousness.
4 May he defend the afflicted among the people
and save the children of the needy;
may he crush the oppressor.
5 May he endure as long as the sun,
as long as the moon, through all generations.
6 May he be like rain falling on a mown field,
like showers watering the earth.
7 In his days may the righteous flourish
and prosperity abound till the moon is no more.

Meditation
1. Silence – Read/Listen – Meditate – Pray – Contemplate

2. What is the word or phrase that touches you today as you read and
meditate on this passage? What is your emotion as you read this
word or phrase? How is that related to your current situation? What
does God tell you to do?

3. This psalm is regarded in Jewish and Christian tradition as “messianic”.
One day a coming King will “judge your people in righteousness”
and “defend the afflicted”.

4. Can you honestly say that God is your ruler? If not, who is? If so,
how does your life reveal God’s rule? What does it mean to have
God as King?

Prayer & Journaling:
Stay with God for a little longer. Continue to converse with God and listen
to what he wants to tell me. Then write down any thought and/or prayer
in the 2012 “Spiritual Journal” book.
